  • I have a number of Raymond Fowler's books. He has written a number of them and he has made an important and substantial contribution to UFOlogy. This book looks back at his involvement with the phenomenon, how it began for him and where it led and his involvement in some of the most interesting cases ever to be documented, as well as the other important cases that were happening concurrently and the evolution of the field. It is easy reading and interesting throughout. A good place to start with his body of work on the subject.

  • This book by veteran UFO buff Raymond Fowler was published in 1981. He recounts some cases from his years of being an investigator for NICAP, MUFON and CUFOS. Some of it is very interesting, some of it not so much. The account of the decline of NICAP following the intervention of the mysterious Colonel Bryan, the "Incident at Exeter", plus the contents of the later chapters, in which the contents of formerly classified documents concerning incursions into restricted airspace, the Iranian UFO of 1976, the Cuban UFO incident of 1967 and reports of mysteriously deactivated nuclear missiles are highlights. Fowler also presents some extracts from Leonard Stringfields first two Crash Retrieval Status Reports, including how Stringfield and a newsman first interviewed "Major J.M." about the reported Roswell incident in April 1978. Somewhat unusually for a UFO buff, he links cattle mutilations with UFOs, but he only devotes a page to the subject, and, perhaps to counter any fear about UFOs, in his conclusion he lists five characteristics of UFO occupants, including the bare assertion, "They love mankind."

The book made me wonder how Fowler's family put up with his UFO hobby. Fowler relates in a couple of places about getting late night phone calls from frantic people and then of how he would depart the next morning to investigate his reports. The book has a gloomy conclusion: "In my opinion, civilian UFO research is at a dead end. I must confess that after years and years, investigating and documenting the same types of unexplained events has become routine and frustrating. It is disheartening to realize that the detailed, concise, typewritten reports I mail to MUFON and CUFOS will be filed and lost in a mountain of other reports." He's probably right. At present, this book is selling very cheaply, so it's well worth a look.
