Juana Inés de Asbaje y Ramírez de Santillana, nació en 12 de noviembre de 1651 en San Miguel de Nepantla, Amecameca. Era hija de padre vasco y madre mexicana. Empezó a escribir a los ocho de edad una loa al Santísimo Sacramento. A los dieciséis años ingresó en el Convento de Santa Teresa la Antigua y posteriormente en el de San Jerónimo. En plena madurez literaria, criticó un sermón del padre Vieyra. Ello provocó que el obispo de Puebla, Manuel Fernández de Santa Cruz le escribiera exigiéndole que abandonase la literatura y se dedicase por entero a la religión. Sor Juana se defendió en una epístola autobiográfica, en la que proclamó los derechos de la mujer.
