Ruppert) interviews Katrina Maxtone-Graham, author (An Adopted Woman) and mother of Guy Maxtone-Graham, writer, actor {Beavis and Butt-head} as well as of Ian Maxtone-Graham, writer, producer (Saturday Night Live; The Simpsons).

Ian Maxtone-Graham (born July 3, 1959) is a television writer and producer. He has written for Saturday Night Live (1992-1995), The Simpsons (1995-2015) and has also served as a co-executive producer and consulting producer for The Simpsons. Ian was born in New York City, the son of naval historian and author John Maxtone-Graham and author Katrina Maxtone-Graham (née Kanzler), and the great-nephew of the British author and poet Joyce Maxtone-Graham (pen name Jan Struther)

Maxtone-Graham made hundreds of crossings, spending more time at sea than on land, and recreated the glory days of luxury liners in books and lectures. John Maxtone-Graham, a New Jersey-born naval historian whose books and shipboard lectures evoked the lost glamour of trans-Atlantic ocean liners, died on Monday in Manhattan. On Broadway, Mr. Maxtone-Graham was the stage manager for What Every Woman Knows, with Helen Hayes, in 1955; Tennessee Williams’s A Streetcar Named Desire and a production of King Lear with Orson Welles in 1956; Brigadoon in 1957; and The Night of the Iguana, with Bette Davis and Margaret Leighton, in 1961-62.

John Maxtone-Graham (1929–2015) wrote many books on trans-Atlantic ocean travel, among them Titanic Tragedy: A New Look at the Lost Liner, Normandie: France's Legendary Art Deco Ocean Liner, and The Only Way to Cross, which has been in print for almost forty years. However, this book is the quintessential Normandie volume, despite the excessive price tag (perhaps reminiscent of it's namesake). The book details the life of the Normandie from the inception of the idea on the drawing board of Vladimir Yourkevitch until its "Imprisonment and Immolation" at Pier 88 during WWII.

There's a woman with three children well along, a girl who had three abortions, another who was opposed to the idea but admitted the necessity thereof, several who gave their children up for adoption, a childless woman who discusses what happened 22 years after the fact in a different climate when abortion wasn't even discussed, and so forth. There is, inevitably, a certain sameness to these variant versions of the next to oldest story in the world, but the book serves its purpose - to provide legal, religious and ethical supports.

The author describes her search for her natural parents and the many legal obstacles to discovering her true identity
  • I read this book years ago when it was first published and I was totally engrossed in it from beginning to end. It read like a mystery story--a woman who had been adopted as an infant searching for her birthparents. What a process she had to go through to get ANY information at all about her biological family! There are several other great books by adoptees searching for their biological parents, and all are very heartfelt, engrossing reading.

  • For adoptees born in NY and other states that have legally barred adoptees from discovering their family histories and biological roots, this book is a huge uplift. The writer details her experiences as an adoptee, her search for answers to the questions that plague adoptees and her battle with the adoption agency that placed her.
