Though there are several ethnic communities in India, the three groups constitute major and primary traditions of the Indian society. All Indian social phenomena and realities get their manifestations in these three streams of traditions. Yogendra Singh is an Indian sociologist. He is one of the founders of the Centre for the Study of Social Systems, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India, where he is a professor emeritus of Sociology, and where he has been a professor since 1971. Prior to it, he went to Stanford University, USA in 1967–68 on a Fulbright Fellowship and was Professor and Head of the Department of Sociology, Jodhpur University.

The composite nature of this concept renders it pervasive in the vocabulary of social sciences and evokes its kinship with concepts like development, growth, evolution and progress

Social change in India has been natural as well as planned or sponsored. Both types of changes have been simultaneous, mutually reinforcing and yet distinct. With the passage of time, history has witnessed rise of individualism, atomism, ‘secularism’ and ‘scientism’.
Both Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, though differed in their perceptions about future of India, they contributed immensely for modernization of India . However, a large number of studies indicated that Indian tradition did not blur the path of progress which India had set up for itself in the Constitution, Five Year Plans and other such means for a new India. Resilience has been a strong hallmark of the dynamics of Indian society.
