The Ottoman Empire was the longest-lived regional regime in the Middle East since antiquity; it was also the most recent, and left enduring traces. ükrü Hanioğlu's A Brief History of the Late Ottoman Empire is a major contribution to the better understanding of the region. Concerned with trends more than events, this book illuminates the ideas and movements that shaped the course of history. --Bernard Lewis, Middle East Strategy at Harvard.

As sultan Mehmed II conquered Constantinople (today named Istanbul) in 1453, the state grew into a mighty empire, expanding deeply into Europe, northern Africa and the Middle East. The Empire reached its apex under Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century when it stretched from the Persian Gulf in the east to Algeria in the west; and from Yemen in the south to Hungary and parts of Ukraine in the north.

The Ottoman Empire was founded in Anatolia, the location of modern-day Turkey. Originating in Söğüt (near Bursa, Turkey), the Ottoman dynasty expanded its reign early on through extensive raiding. This was enabled by the decline of the Seljuq dynasty, the previous rulers of Anatolia, who were suffering defeat from Mongol invasion. The first period of Ottoman history was characterized by almost continuous territorial expansion, during which Ottoman dominion spread out from a small northwestern Anatolian principality to cover most of southeastern Europe and Anatolia.

This is unfortunate, because the Ottoman Empire has an impressive and fascinating past, often closely tied to European affairs. This is the sort of book you dream of being able to put number one on a list: a single volume history of verve and skill. Only published after the first version of this page, it shoots to number one as the essential starting point for readers. However, it is a little hard to read.
