  • For many who are beginning to study Russian, the Cyrillic alphabet presents more of a barrier than most texts and self-help books seem to acknowledge. The absolute beginner often needs a source that introduces specific sets of the letters and accompanying sounds and then proceeds to provide drills (via simple vocabulary) for practicing them. This workbook is provides that source in a "step-by-step" fashion that is very effective. I would urge anyone using the workbook to get the audio component; I think that it should be an integral part of the workbook, but it isn't and so you will need to go to the web site russianstepbystep.com in order to place your order for the download or the CD. Apparently, the audio component was recorded in casual circumstances and you can hear many extraneous background sounds (including people talking and laughing); at the same time, the speaker's voice is clear and so those extra sounds can be ignored.

If you have prior experience with Russian, you may find that this workbook is too simple. But if you are starting Russian (and especially if you are starting out on your own), this is an excellent place to begin.

  • The audio is NOT included with the book--you must download it on-line. You go to their website, find the audio link, and you have to register. Then they tell you to wait for an email allowing you to download. Apparently that email never comes, so I just hit the login button and was able to download the audios. I'll update this review after I start the lessons.

  • I am Turkish but speak English as well. I have several Russian friends and we teach each other ( russian - turkish exchange). I was scared to learn reading in Russian (tried some free resources online), but one of them shared this workbook with me (I ended up buying my own copy – worth every dollar) and I learned it in 3 weeks with about 4-5 hours of studying a week (I was trying to do it every day, but life with kids gets busy). I bought their beginner book and one book for my kids and have seen good results too. I only wish they had it translated into Turkish

  • This book isn't worth the cost. At first glance, it appears to be a good book. However, it is slightly smaller than a standard workbook. The actual size isn't a big deal and could be an asset but it isn't. The book just seems cheaply manufactured. Many pages are filled with blank lines for you to translate sentences into Russian. It is listed as [cd] [paperback] however you only get the paperback. I thought others may have been charged additionally for the download because they bought the book used. No - everybody pays an additional $14.99. There just isn't much here for the price and certainly not worth putting more money into the one book. Workbooks are somewhat hard to find but I would try something else. Two stars seems harsh but - I don't like it.

  • This made learning Russian fun. The next book is even better, as the audio does not have any English so far, which can be annoying. I'm very surprised that more polyglots do not know about this series.

This workbook made learning the alphabet so easy. I wish there was something similar available for Hindi.

  • I purchased this book based on the positive reviews I saw on Amazon. The book was not at all what I expected. This book would be appropriate for a young child learning Russian but is next to useless for an adult. Keep in mind the book is only 58 pages long and basically only teaches you the Cyrillic alphabet which can be learned elsewhere for free. The exercises are very basic and simple and I was expecting much more for a $17 book. The fact that it was only 58 pages was extremely disappointing so don't expect to get much mileage out of it and it does not teach you any type of grammar rules or simple word formation such as the endings that change on words based on the gender. In addition the obtaining the audio portion from the website is next to impossible. If you want to understand the process read the review I posted on Reading Russian Step by Step: Beginner book that is written by the same author. I was extremely disappointed with this book and returned it. Amazon as always was great on shipping and returning.

  • wish the c d came withe it
