Arguably the best book ever written on American genealogy, it is the text of choice in colleges and universities or wherever courses in American genealogy are taught

Arguably the best book ever written on American genealogy, it is the text of choice in colleges and universities or wherever courses in American genealogy are taught. Of the dozens of textbooks, manuals, and how-to books that have appeared over the past twenty-five years, it is the one book that is consistently praised for setting a standard of excellence.

A definitive textbook and an all-purpose reference, this new work constitutes the most important advance in genealogy since the beginning of vital records. It is a detailed examination of the various types of records that can be found in specific areas and in specific time periods; it identifies and classifies the records, groups them in convenient tables and charges, gives their location, explains there uses, and evaluates each of them I'm the context of the research process. Whether ship passenger lists or census records or marriage registers are under discussion, the author interprets the background, gives an account of the original records, analyzing their uses, and instructs the genealogists in the basic principles governing research in that particular class record.
  • This was purchased as a text book for a genealogy class and it is extremely informative. It promotes a real and systematic research approach and covers nearly every resource available to a family historian. Not only does it tell you what resources are available and how to use them, it also gives you insight into their quirks and how they have changed over time. I have purchased other light weight books about genealogy but this one has some real weight. It is absolutely worth the investment. After reading 80% of this book I know I will be referring to it again and again. It certainly is not going to be a dust gatherer on my bookshelf.

  • Val Greenwood's book on American Genealogy is well written and very thorough. This is my first class in genealogy and family history, so I was concerned that the book would be hard to follow. I have been pleasantly surprised to find that it is easy to understand and very helpful

  • This book was originally written before the internet. Very good guide to genealogy the "old fashioned" way by writing letters and visiting court houses all the time. This edition he added a chapter on internet searching which he considers a tool to be used but not solely relied upon. Lots of resources listed to help find those hard to find records.

  • I especially like Chapter 7 on "Organizing and Evaluating Research Findings". It is important to know how to store the data once you have found it, how to access it once you have "put it away".

  • Lots of useful information.

  • This has helped me when I hit a few road blocks.

  • Good reference source and very helpful.

  • For Genealogy studies
