An English professor (and a good one) of mine back in the day didn't like this book, bless her heart, but, bless her heart she was wrong. And it covers those basics in an easy-to -follow format.

  • The best all-around grammar and usage book I have used. I started using it in 1987 and have bought it for my children and graduate students.

  • I was an English teacher who found his book to be the best resource that I have ever used. Over 35 years I know that I have purchased more than 25 of these books for my own children, grandchildren, scholarship recipients from my church and friends. I have been able to do this because I have purchased many used copies of this book which were in excellent condition. I have just ordered 6 copies , in addition to the 6 copies that I received two weeks ago. I have learned not to loan this book to anyone because i have lost several copies to people who never return the book no matter how many times that I ask them to do so.
The material is readily accessible because of the way it is arranged. The information is easy to understand and is concise. The book is very light weight so portability is no problem. The writing process, grammar, and spelling are the main topics , but science, geography, and history are also included. Work sheets were available when the book was new..

  • Received one of these books in junior high...that was decades ago. Have all sorts of reference books for writing since my degree is in English, but still reach for this old book first. We affectionately call it "The Yellow Book of Everything with Everything Inside". So, now I'm giving it to my kids, nieces, and nephews as part of their HS graduation gift. Too bad it is out of print & you can only get old copies.

  • yes, this is my favorite book in the english language!!! besides the bible and alcoholics anonymous "big book" i generally don't need to read anything else... this book should be on every bookshelf in american's homes!!!

  • The content was fine but the pages are falling out of the book. Not good condition as advertised!

  • The BEST basic English book out there

  • This is a must-have book to keep on hand. I almost wish I had one for work too. I think every kid (even college) kid should have one of these books!

  • this book is in better shape than i could have expected... very few markings other than for the card catalog for the library from which it came...
