Syntax in the making. grammar can be said to exist: grammar is a vaguely dened set of grammaticized recurrent patterns of discourse (see esp. Hopper 1987, 1988; cf. also Chafe 1994; Du Bois 1985, 1987a; Givn 1979; Ono and Thompson 1995). See Section . for further discussion. This study is not concerned with the history of the grammaticized items or constructions per se, but rather, attempts to describe their grammar as it is being realized in present-day Finnish discourse.

Discourse data in Finnish conversations has been used to explore how syntax is being structured in discourse. The author has studied syntactic structures in their local contexts to find out about the more global patterns and constraints on the use of the structures. Chapters discuss topics such as clauses and clausal syntactic relations, grammatical structures as cognitive schemas, grammaticization of the subject role, free NPs, and intonation and syntactuc structuring.
