Grammar alive! : a guide for teachers I Brock Haussamen, with Am. This guide is the product of many years of ATEG members' ex citement about the possibilities for teaching grammar and their dismay that the subject has remained so bogged down in outdated ideas and approaches.

Grammar alive! : a guide for teachers I Brock Haussamen, with Amy. Benjamin, Martha Kolin, and Rebecca Wheeler and members of NCTE's Assembly for the Teaching of English Grammar. In 1998, a committee began work on a report that evolved into this book. The several authors of the book have both written portions of it and helped revise one another's work, so the collaboration has been a rich one.

Should teachers ignore it and hope it disappears?

The readers came together for the first ATEG conference at Dr. Vavra's institution, Shenandoah College in Winchester, Virginia, in 1989. And they never use a grammar book! -Amy Benjamin x

Grammar has been characterized as "the skunk at the garden party of the language arts." Should teachers ignore it and hope it disappears? Cautiously engage with it? In this informal and inviting book, Brock Haussamen and other members of NCTE’s Assembly for the Teaching of English Grammar offer a much-needed resource for the myriad K–12 teachers who wonder what to do about grammar—how to teach it, how to apply it, how to learn what they themselves were never taught. Anticipating the pressures of standardized and high-stakes testing that threaten to revive older, ineffective methods of teaching grammar, the authors of _Grammar Alive!_ offer teachers ways to negotiate the often conflicting goals of testing, confident writing, the culturally inclusive classroom, and the teaching of Standard English while also honoring other varieties of English. Novice and veteran teachers alike will appreciate the hands-on approach to grammar in the classroom that includes numerous examples and practical vignettes describing real teachers’ real classroom experiences with specific grammar lessons—including ESL issues—as well as the chapters that review grammar basics, from how to diagram a sentence to the elements of linguistic grammar. A grammar glossary and annotated list of sources for further reading round out the book. _Grammar Alive!_ is ideal for teachers who believe that grammar could play an important and enjoyable role in the language arts if only they knew better ways to teach it.
  • I had to buy this for a class and was dreading reading it. However, I was surprised that not only is "Grammar Alive" written in an entertaining way, but it makes grammar interesting and accessible. If you have a friend who is constantly correcting your grammar, this book will give you the tools to shut them up. Plus, there are a lot of great tips for teachers.

  • Thank you for this helpful product!

  • This book came highly recommended by her majesty, the Queen of Grammar, Constance Weaver. I purchased it and found some of it useful in my research regarding grammar instruction. Still, I think it's worth the read for language arts arts teachers. It's an easy read and was produced by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) to help demystify the grammar stigma in the language arts classrooms.

  • While this book will not solve the problems of those seeking absolute expertise regarding the intricacies of grammar, it does offer valuable insights on teaching this difficult subject. Many lessons build on common sense knowledge that all teachers(and students)already possess. Myths about time-honored grammar rules are illuminated and de-bunked and there are excellent references for further reading. As a teacher of English, I am always looking for ways to de-mystify grammar, both for my students and for myself, and this book is a good reference towards that goal.

  • Well done text. Lots of great ideas and suggestions. Addresses a tough topic, and makes it both interesting and fun. Recommended.

  • Haussamen's book is meant to address the modern nature of grammar studies which have become, in the author's words, "bogged down by outdated ideas and approaches." I don't know when teaching grammar in a structured manner became outdated. One of the vignettes describes an English teacher's student-centered (Dewey style) classroom learning environment as pure chaos spilling out into the hallway like it's a good thing. I would have gone mad if I were a student or a teacher in this sort of environment. The students in this vignette are getting carried away in creating traffic signs, advertising slogans, and sitcom titles which incorporate words and expressions like "idiot" and "duh." Ultimately, this lesson created better programmed consumers from the teacher's use of the surrounding social claptrap. Edward Bernays would have been proud. Haussamen asks, "How can we teach grammar so that students discover its rules and principles on their own instead of hearing us impose those rules and principles on them?" I wonder how he'd teach driver's ed? "Here's the keys and there's the car. Have at it! I don't want you to have an unpleasant experience getting bogged down with all that traffic safety and defensive driving nonsense."

I'll give the book three stars for the contents of the second half. Haussamen offers helpful refresher information on the technical elements of grammar and sentence structure through definition and sentence diagramming. The diagrams are a bit vague in their modeling, but it shouldn't be a huge problem if you've done some sentence diagramming before. Noam Chomsky's "Language and Mind" offers an easier-to-follow method of diagramming with syntactic trees.

  • The book is a required text so it will serve it's purpose. The great part was that it was far less expensive than purchasing from the university bookstore; it arrived as promised and it was representative of the sellers description. I would buy from this seller again.
