She has experience teaching English to non-native speakers in Mexico, Spain, and the United States.

by Martha J Kolln(Author), Loretta S Gray(Author). Kolin and Gray ask students to regard sentence structure as a toolkit - and its application an artful way to elicit a desired emotion or reaction - rather than a list of tedious rules to remember.

What Is Rhetorical Grammar? to understand the subject matter of a book with the title Rhetorical Grammar, you’ll obviously have to understand not only the meaning of both rhetoric and grammar but also their relationship to each other. Kolln, The Pennsylvania State University. Gray, Central Washington University. Rhetorical Grammar is a writer's grammar - a text that presents grammar as a rhetorical tool, avoiding the do's and don'ts so long associated with the study of grammar.

Rhetorical Grammar encourages writers to recognize and use the grammatical and stylistic choices available to them and to understand the rhetorical effects those choices can have on their readers.

Rhetorical Grammar is a writer's grammar - a text that presents grammar as a rhetorical tool, avoiding the do's and don'ts so long associated with the study of grammar. It reveals to writers the system of grammar that they know subconsciously and encourages them to use that knowledge to understand their choices as writers and the effects of those choices on their readers. Besides providing key strategies for revision, Rhetorical Grammar presents systematic discussions of reader expectation, sentence rhythm and cohesion, subordination and coordination, punctuation, modification, diction, and other principles.
  • Conversational, accessible, and well-organized, "Rhetorical Grammar" is an excellent resource for writers of all abilities. Even for people who love to write, grammar review and revision can be a dreadful affair. Many of us can recall the grammar exercises of our youth, with their repetition and rules without contextual meaning. Kolln and Gray make grammar relevant, almost interesting!--by returning it to its rhetorical context: how, when, and why we use words to communicate.

The text starts off gently, introducing us to the concept of breaking sentences into subjects and predicates and going on from there (goodbye, old rules! hello, improved understanding!). I loved language even as a kid, but while I understood good vs. bad writing, I could never properly articulate how I knew. "Rhetorical Grammar" helps us name what works in a sentence and what doesn't, through discussion, examples, and exercises that build gently from chapter to chapter. The exercises are simple but very useful as reinforcements of what we learn in each section.

This is not a workbook; it's a conversation between the writers and the readers who want to improve their writing. Well-indexed, easy to use, and definitely a keeper.

P.S.: If you're getting this because it was assigned for a class, don't begrudge your professor. She or he is doing you a great service by making you get something you'll be able to use for the remainder of your writing career, no matter what your profession.

  • An elegantly written book on grammar and style. Super in-depth and full of interesting tidbits about how the English language formed and how that effects our writing today. If your syntax needs improving, or you simply want a more scientific grasp of the English language, this is the book to buy.

A caveat: you should come to this book with a basic knowledge of English and expect it to be a fairly tough read. But it's totally worth it.

  • Needed it for School... came quickly. No complaints here

  • Great resource for teaching grammar.

  • This is a rather good grammar book, but it is certainly has a more 'academic' feel than "Eats, Shoots & Leaves". (There's no Underline or Italicise button, sorry.) It takes a few passes to really understand what she is saying and it sometimes makes the grammar seem more difficult than it ought to be, but it is a good book nonetheless. She, at the least, seems to know well what she is doing, and tries to instruct her readers the same way she understands grammar (which is with lots of categories and elevated language and a sort of advanced filing system). People who intend to read this book, just be forewarned that she is a bit difficult to follow on occasion. For the most part, I had little problem; taking Latin certainly helped with learning the categories of English Grammar. However, people who have not learned any sort of foreign language or had any advance grammatical...training...may have difficulty with this book.

    But I still love it.

  • i needed to improve my writing quickly- this really helped me out!

  • Was in great condition!

  • GREAT!!
