Some are professional animators, designers, illustrators and artists, but equally many are happy amateurs with no loftier ambitions, for whom drawing is a passion and a companion.

Some are professional animators, designers, illustrators and artists, but equally many are happy amateurs with no loftier ambitions, for whom drawing is a passion and a companion. And no matter where they hail from or where they’re headed, no matter how they earn their airfare, there’s remarkable similarity in their experiences and passions. When we document a journey in a sketchbook, we discover the difference between vacationing and traveling; we become adventurers, discovering new worlds through a thousand tiny details

An Illustrated Life book. I also recommend "An Illustrated Journey: Inspiration From the Private Art Journals of Traveling Artists, Illustrators and Designers," which takes the sketchbook on the road.

An Illustrated Life book. A real inspiration to keep a journal while traveling, and train the eye to see new places in a whole new way.

Travel + Sketching = InspirationWhen we travel, we don't want to follow the same itinerary as everyone who's come before us. We want to feel like explorers, adventurers in undiscovered territory. And that's exactly what sketching can bring to the travel experience. An Illustrated Journey captures the world through the eyes of 40 talented artists, illustrators and designers. You'll experience the wonder of seeing familiar sights through a fresh lens but, more important, you'll be inspired to set pen to paper and capture your own vistas. The really wonderful thing about a sketchbook is that it can be totally private. You don't have to have an ounce of talent to enjoy learning how to really see what's in front of you. But lucky for us, the sketchbooks captured here are lovely, creative, intimate windows into each artist's mind. So, whether you're just returning to the art of drawing, abandoned by most of us after childhood, or you're looking for inspiration to take your illustration work in a new direction, An Illustrated Journey will take you on a wonderful trip of the imagination. All you need to pack are a pencil and a piece of paper.
  • I've had this book for about a week now, and I've been going over and over the drawings of the 40 artists/contributors in the book. Rather than just take delight and inspiration in the sketches, the text is of great value and interest, too. It can be read like any other book and the art consumed for hours.

The contributors, including Danny Gregory, have traveled all over the world and have seen it with new eyes as they've gone from place to place and have drawn and painted people, buildings, foods, whatever they've seen that interested them as a subject. It's a feast for the eyes.

Styles are as diverse as the artists are in number. I enjoyed seeing the difference in how people see the world and also their differences in the supplies they use. One man said he uses only the cheapest sketch books and the same two ballpoint pens to sketch with, and they're the cheap kind that are found in hotel rooms. Others use more expensive materials but the results are the same. Beautiful drawings no matter what they're done with.

It is enjoyable to read what is written near or on some of the sketches in the journal pages and some of them are quite funny. Some are done as sketches in preparation for paintings, and others are to remind the artist of the time and feelings of that particular place. Danny Gregory's An Illustrated Life: Drawing Inspiration from the Private Sketchbooks of Artists, Illustrators and Designers is as good as this one, An Illustrated Journey: Inspiration From the Private Art Journals of Traveling Artists, Illustrators and Designers and is just as interesting to read and to dive headfirst into the artwork.

Both of these books are very inspirational for anyone who reads them. If you haven't picked up a sketchbook and pencil for a while, after you see this book, it's likely you will. Highly recommended.

  • I am so glad I bought this book. Although I've been journaling off and on for years, I've not been great about including illustrations. I had no idea it was such a wide spread practice. I pick up this book almost everyday and glance through it for information, i.e. what kind of gear is needed for journal sketching and inspiration from page after page of great examples of illustrations. The difference in styles leads one to believe that he/she can create an illustrated journal and indeed they can. There is a recurring theme to the information given: Draw, draw, draw and the feeling they get more out of their trip by taking time to sit, draw and make notes. Cameras are great but it's so easy to just snap and run. When you get home you have a camera full of photos but if you haven't really spent some quality time at a site, are you going to retain the sights, sounds, texture, etc. years later?
Because of this book, I am now drawing more, just things around town for now but I'm getting ready all the time for when I do travel. I can't recommend this book highly enough. If you're truly interested in illustrative journaling, pick up this book and be prepared to be seduced by the shear beauty and volume.

    P.S. Why isn't there 6 STARS

  • Putting together examples from people who keep illustrated diaries, especially art from their travels, is a fantastic idea realized by Danny Gregory. First he gave us the gift of showing us his illustrated journals, and now these. It's a beautiful book and will make you want to bring a blank notebook and some pens along on your next trip, whether it's across the world or across the street to the coffee bar.
Just do yourself a favor: Get the real paper version of this book. My mistake was succumbing to the need for instant gratification and buying the Kindle version. You will want to see the details on some of these beautiful illustrations, you'll enlarge the art on the Kindle, it will pixilate and no amount of S'mores will console you. Trust me on this.
