Clear, step-by-step writing instruction, ample annotated student essays, and extensive practice opportunities for writing have made The Longman Writer one of the most successful nt guides for college writing. Created by the authors of the best-selling Longman Reader, the text draws on decades of teaching experience to integrate the best of the "product" and "process" approaches to writing. Its particular strengths include an emphasis on the reading-writing connection, a focus on invention and revision, attention to the fact that patterns blend in actual.

Judith Nadell (Author), John Langan (Author), Eliza A. ISBN-13: 978-0321236418. The Longman Reader is a very useful book for mastering the basics of English grammar rules and getting used to college writing. I used this book for my first communications course in college and it proved a very handy companion when I needed to write essays, for two reasons; firstly, the book has a lot of concise guides on grammar rules and essay writing guides and secondly, it has real annotated samples of different kinds of texts.

Featuring the same superior teaching apparatus and thought-provoking selections as its widely-praised parent text, The Longman Reader, Brief Edition is a shorter and more portable alternative to the best-selling, rhetorically-organized original, The Longman Reader (formerly titled The Macmillian Reader). Thirty-four outstanding selections represent a blend of favorite standards and fresh, new pieces on a variety of topics such as family life, education, technology, race, mass culture, and morality.
  • First of all this review will not be written with a formal tone... lol But yea I'm currently using this book in ENC 1101 and it's great. It's going to lay the foundation for the upper levels of writing and rhetoric. We have basically went over the different types of essays and how to use them to convey what ever message you need addressed. Some of my favorite types of writing styles have been narration, comparison/contrast, and definition. It is most likely safe to say. That one could use vivid detail to inform the reader of ones point, in any style of writing. However it is my opinion that narrative essays thrive with such detail. Just as a ship with open sails, thrives with the wind at it's back.( okay I went a little formal at the end lol)

  • The Longman Reader is a very useful book for mastering the basics of English grammar rules and getting used to college writing. I used this book for my first communications course in college and it proved a very handy companion when I needed to write essays, for two reasons; firstly, the book has a lot of concise guides on grammar rules and essay writing guides and secondly, it has real annotated samples of different kinds of texts.

I would recommend you buy this book if you're not especially sound with your written English, as it can be a useful guide for any time you need to write a structured document. Otherwise, I'd recommend you rent this book. The exception here is that your college may require you to have an access code for the book, in which case you need to buy the book to ensure you get the access code.

  • The same as the new version minus the mla part but that is free online.

  • This was deceiving. It had the title and edition called for in class but it was missing a lot of content needed. I paid a lot for something that I could not use.

  • Work for my ENGL 1301 at CTC. I did have to find the passages that matched the lessons in class but Ingt by fine with renting this book.

  • I plan to return this book. I think it is nowhere near good condition. The corners of the front are gone and it's bent up, as well as 30-50 pages back are worn a half inch on both corners.

  • This is an abbreviated edition. The page numbers will be different from the bookstore edition. Basically, the important essays are included.

  • This is your typical writing manual. Our college requires it and it was significantly cheaper on Amazon than it was in the bookstore. Just make sure the ISBN matches.
