Role of Mother essaysA good mother has been historically expected to contribute her whole life to her family. Mothers have been the glue that holds a family together because it is up to them to provide the loving care and support needed by growing children. WORKING MOTHER In the past in a traditional family the man was responsible for all the financial matters and expenses, and the woman for the raising of the children and all the housework. In 'Night Mother the playwright Marsha Norman introduces us the two characters of the play Jessie Cates and her mother Thelma Cates. This play gives the final hour and the flashbacks of half of the Jessie's life.

The Role of the Mother in Character Building Every society is made up of blocks of family units. The stronger each block is, the stronger the structure of the society. Families are thus the building blocks upon which rests the fate of society. For the development of good families, the mother plays a vital role. Many women today have aspirations of progress in their careers, and degrees in various fields. However it is indisputable that the most important achievement of a mother is the raising of sensible, virtuous children who will then move on to build other strong blocks for society

but to try to fill the roles of mom and dad the insight and support needed.

  • If "Our Mother's Daughters" dealt with one generation and gender- daughters and their relationship with their mothers, then "Every Mother's Son" fast forwarded to a differing generation and gender- namely the relationship between Arcana and her growing son Daniel, from infancy to the verge of adolescence.
In the forewards Arcana notes that whenever she speaks publicly women ask her "What about the boys?" (irrespective whether or not they have male children or even children in the first place presumably).
"Every Mother's Son" is an attempt to answer the question. Although I found it interesting and times moving, I must confess to a certain disappointment that Daniel's father Michael is so little in the picture. True, he and Arcana are now divorced(why is unclear) but even so he could have added vlauable imput in what it meant to be a father of a boy child.
I do hope there will be a follow up to EMS when Daniel enters the "terrible teens"!, but all in all it was a deeply interesting if not moving study of a mother watching her boy grow from infant to the verge of adolescence!

  • From the back cover: “Is it possible for us to bring up boys in a non-sexist way? That’s the question at the core of this groundbreaking book...During the first ten years of her son Daniel’s life, Judith Arcana kept a journal in which she recorded her experiences as a mother--specifically as a mother of a boy. Drawing from her journal and from interviews with sixty mothers and sons, Arcana presents a compelling examination of male socialization and the role of women in raising sons....Every Mother’s Son is an honest, moving portrait of family dynamics and sexual politics that deserves to be read by everyone.”
