  • Jane Nelson has changed my life and my relationship with my children. The whole Positive Discipline series is so logical and so much better for your relationship with your children long term. It teaches that you shouldn't blindly trade long term detrimental effects of punitive punishment for immediate compliance out of blame, shame and pain. Parents do what their parents did and there's no manual for raising your child. If there was, these Positive Discipline and Time-Out books would be it. I highly recommend the whole set. You treat your child with dignity and respect and their compliance and cooperation is a natural consequence.

  • I will update my review when I have had a chance to finish reading it. As it stands at the present, I will give 4 stars to «Positive Time Out: And Over 50 Ways to Avoid Power Struggles in the Home» from my initial skim/read-through. The term "time out" has negative connotations both in the home and in schools. I recall mostly using the self-limiting qualifying phrase "...when you can...", when I personally made use of the term many years ago with my own children, so perhaps I am predisposed to transfer responsibility to the child rather than merely punishing the child. At any rate, I like the approach in this book and feel sure most parents and care-givers will find useful suggestions.

  • I've read Positive Discipline: The First Three Years, Positive Discipline: A-Z 1001 Solutions to Everyday Parenting Problems, Terrific Twos, No Bad Kids: Toddler Discipline Without Shame & this. This is the only one I can actually give 5 stars instead of 3-4 stars!! This book is incredibly helpful! ! The mistaken goal chart is extremely helpful. It should be hung up in every home and classroom.

  • I had an assignment to do about the use of time outs and their effect on behavior. This book was a good resource for writing that paper. I'm glad I ordered it!
It was informative and offered specific suggestions on what to do instead of a punitive time out.

  • I like that this is short and sweet. And it has the table of the various types of misguided behaviors, how to recognize them and remediate the problems.
It's written clearly and succinctly, and is appraochable to all.
It focusse on discipline in general, starting with time-outs. It present a respectful, clear and efficient way to help your kids learn to control themselves and follow social rules.

  • s must have for parents with strong willed children!!!! also helpful with parenting with my more shy, unsure tween!!!!

  • Amazing book -- it has enhanced my relationship with my grandchildren. Thank you Jane Nelsen.

  • This is an excellent book. I purchased it because our 9 year old has severe ADHD and ODD(oppositional defiant disorder) and as a parent once I started reading this book, I felt like yes, there are other avenues to get positive results and I have been using some of the methods with good results. This book would be good for any parent to read.We struggle with the school as well and I have already recommended it to his Special Education teacher who has taught for 30 years and never heard of this, so as a parent struggling with behavior issues this is like a godsend for me.I think we need our time to be productive and positive and this book is an easy read and well worth getting. I only wish I had known about it sooner. There are alot of books out there and I don't always know what will be right for us but this is a winner in my book.
