I chose Don Dinkmeyer and Gary McKay's three-day workshop called Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP). Since I had not been a parent but I had been a child I wondered what else there was besides punishment, reward, spanking, lectures and threats. I was surprised to learn that giving a choice such as a natural or a logical consequence is more effective than reward and punishment. I facilitate effective parenting classes and use this book as the text book. This book is why we have a great kid! Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 19 years ago.

An informative best-seller-updated with a new format and illustrations--with proven techniques for better parent-teen relationships.
  • Suggested to me by therapist. Excellent book. It's only been a few months and nothing happens over night, but this book has been very helpful. I'd recommend it for any parent.

  • This happens to be one of my all time favorite parenting resources. I really like the easily accessible discussion of what constitutes respectful interactions with a teen. The world is changing at a rapid pace, creating increasingly challenging problems and decisions for teens, and their parents. Yet, it is a foundation built on respectful parenting techniques that will create the motivation for a teen to listen to and cooperate with parental limits. How do you encourage cooperation and collaborative mutual problem‐solving?
How do you use consequences to build responsibility and develop character in your child? This book is a good starting point towards those goals. (my only concern is that the dated cover photo may mislead potential readers to assume the material itself is outdated)

  • What a great workbook for parents! My mom is a therapist and she recommended this book and now, so do I! Definitely a must-have for parents of teens.

  • This is an amazing book that guides you through a way of keeping you sane and connected and loving and understanding your teenager!! I have gone back to it as well during those times when you just want to scream and give in!! This has saved me!!

  • It's time for the authors to update this valuable resource. I took a STEP for Children study 8 years ago, and was excited to follow up with the Teen version. However, there are many references to things like limiting the use of the dial up computer time so as not to tie up the house phone. With a few careful updates to make it more 2011+, this could once again be useful to parents. As it is, it feels dated & therefore, not a good choice for my small group.

  • pleased with purchase

  • Offered excellent advice.

  • Loads of good information on communication with teens.
