Wild White Goose Paperback – January 15, 2002. Jiyu-Kennett Reverend Master (Author). But the physical and emotional abuse she went through only made her spiritually stronger. It takes only the most motivated individual to go to the end of her spiritual path as she did.

Master P. Jiyu-Kennett was one of the first Western women recognized as a Zen Master (Roshi). She was given dharma transmission by Koho Zenji, who was chief abbot of Soji-ji, one of the two main temples of the Soto Zen Buddhist sect in Japan. Highest recommendation! Jiyu-Kennett's Japanese diaries ("The Wild, White Goose" in 2 volumes), written during her training and subsequent early priesthood in Japan, are indispensable books as well. Her immense intellect and unconquerable spirit are vividly apparent, and even more intimately given than in this excellent book.

Reverend Master Jiyu-Kennett at Shasta Abbey. My memories of Jiyu Kennett Roshi as a teacher are mixed. She followed in the authoritarian style of her Japanese inheritance. Interpersonally, she was remarkably invasive. The autobiographical aims and purposes behind The Wild, White Goose will be examined in detail later; for the present, we will concentrate upon abstracting the facts from what is largely, to use Kennett’s own words, ‘a work of fiction’ (Kennett 1977a: xi. According to Bodiford, "The relatively low status of dharma transmission means that in and of itself it does not qualify one to accept students or to train disciples.

  • Anyone interested in Zen Buddhism should read this. Period. Englishwoman gets invited in the early '60s to go train as a monk at a monastery in Tokyo and goes; turns out she's the only non-Japanese and the only female (and the only one who can't speak Japanese) in the whole place. She perseveres and has her enlightenment experience. The training is a little too harsh, but it's still a great read. Oh, and it's true.

  • good

  • The Life story of a great and incredible lady. Anything she wrote is absolutely worth having. A great read all the way.

  • I started this book and could not put it down - ended up reading half the book in one day. More than anything else, it makes me realize that the "practice" is always to be found right where we are - there is no need for the circumstances or conditions to be different. Everything that happens, good and bad, is an opportunity to practice. I'm glad that Rev Master shared her experiences - this book is a real jewel.

  • Very good book and delivered in good state.

  • A Real Life sharing

  • For us lay people it's hard to imagine how a woman such as Roshi Jiyu Kennett could have gone through such hardship as she did in order to become an ordained zen priest and teacher. But the physical and emotional abuse she went through only made her spiritually stronger. It takes only the most motivated individual to go to the end of her spiritual path as she did.

It is not just a guide for a buddhist, but a guide for any person who has an ideal in life. I am not sure I would let my health deteriorate to the point the author did to accomplish my most important goal in life. Yet, as she says, she got what she wanted from the experience. For her, it was worth it. Either she's crazy, or she's a model of the highest order.

The book is massive but it reads quickly. I was engrossed in it for a week. I would say it's completely worth to hunt it down as a used copy in order to own it. It does leave a sense of peace to one who reads it. It does feel like you can find the strength to achieve your own ideal if you really want it.

  • serenity in the midst of all-to-human conflict ..understanding your own preconceptions and contribution to it is the way to Buddha mind ..at least that is what I understood reading Wild White Goose. An an invaluable lesson ..a most exceptional book.
