The Apadāna is a collection of biographical stories found in the Khuddaka Nikaya of the Pāli Canon, the scriptures of Theravada Buddhism. Malalasekera describes it as 'a Buddhist Vitae Sanctorum' of Buddhist monks and nuns who lived during the lifetime of the Buddha. It is thought to be one of the latest additions to the canon. The exact meaning of the title Apadāna is not known. Perhaps it means 'life history' or 'legend'.

The Apadāna is the thirteenth book of the Khuddaka Nikāya of the Sutta Piṭaka. The Avadāna in Buddhist Sanskrit literature is its counterpart. The word apadāna means meritorious deed or pure action, and each of the Apadānas offers a tale both of the past and the present. However, these tales are somewhat different from the Jātaka tales as the latter always refers to the past lives of the Buddha himself, whereas the Apadānas mostly deal with the lives of the elders. The text consists of 59 vaggas (chapters) and has four main sections: the Buddhāpadāna, the Paccekabuddhāpadāna, the Therāpadāna, and the Therī-apadāna.
