  • My reading interests have always been wide and varied on topics from A to Z. I just finished reading this fascinating 407 page soft cover book (The complete idiot’s guide to ghosts and hauntings second edition by Tom Ogden) which I purchased for a bargain price on Amazon.
What I really like about this book is that the author, a professional magician for more than 30 years, approaches the topic with a scientific critical eye. He presents the pro and con and explains in simple and easy to understand terms the subject material.

This very informative book is organized, like other “complete idiot’s guides” into five detailed parts. Part one gives an over view of “the great beyond.” The second part explains in detail further aspects in “don’t call us, we’ll call you.” The third part with tongue firmly in cheek the author explores ghost hunters (Who yo gonna call?). The fourth part spins the various spooky ghost stories in “make yourself at home: the hauntings). The final part covers “apparitions and the arts” as he tells about the relationship between the magic arts and the belief in ghosts and hauntings. Do not pass up the appendixes as they have some great resources.

If you are seeking an objective, interesting and informative book on the subject of ghosts and hauntings you should check out this volume.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Though it's an "Idiot's" guide, the author does not insult the intelligence of his reader. The tone of the book is just right. The author does not give himself away as a dyed-in-the-wool believer, and neither is he a rock-em sock-em skeptic a la the CISCOP gang. Instead, he presents the information in a light, fun, informative manner. The bibliography at the back of the book warmed the cockles of my heart, as they've gotten to be rare as hen's teeth in these days of vanishing literacy. In addition there are addresses of groups and other resources for those interested in learning more. Maybe this book was not written for Rocket-Scientist- stiff-upper-lip-all-night-in-the-crypt-ghost hunters (a little joke there...a little irony...) but it covers many topics and it does a masterful job at doing so. For instance, it gives a good accounting of Urban Legends as well as phantasmagoria...now where are you going to find that range under one cover? Yes, Odgen does get a fact or two wrong, but that's a far cry from the usual rote repetition of hearsay that passes for fact in almost every paranormal book on the market. (And, sure, it's a good book for kitty-box reading if that's what your passion is!) I also like his presentation of the historical beginnings of spiritualism, tracing them directly to Swedenborg (an old buddy) and Andrew Jackson Davis, the 19th c. seer before the Foxettes shuffled off with the show in Hydesville, N.Y. Ilustrations are good too--many classics here, including that cute Drummer of Tedworth! And--as a bonus--he includes a mini-Ouija board for some do-it-yourself yesyes fun.

  • Bought this book at the recommendation of a couple of Sci-Fi's "Ghost Hunters" crew. It is indeed a good starter book, but if you take more than a casual interest in ghost hunting, you will quickly outgrow it. The book lacks more of the technical detail a lot of people are seeking, which is probably not the fault of the author, per se...it is an "Idiot's" guide, after all.

It's cheap enough and worth the money to add it to your library, especially for casual paranormal enthusiasts.

  • I ordered this book because a college Pal called me and said he was featured in this book so I ordered it. It is a good book if you do not reserch what is real and not real. For me, I think it is fluff, stupid and insulting to people that have an I.Q. over 2.

  • I can honestly say this item is worth buying. I purchased it for my fiance who is a paranormal investigator and he really enjoyed it. It may have told him a few things he was already aware of, but he has looked at it on more than one occasion. His website is [...]

  • Well, of all the Ghost hunting type books we have, I believe this is the most detailed and easiest to comprehend. However, still no signs of any ghost activities in these parts. Pooey.

  • I only wish it was longer.

  • The Best part of this book are the references the author gives of professionals who actually Do this work on a daily basis. Take the contact information for example of Psychic-Medium and Parapsychological Investigator: Michael J. Kouri who has appeared on more International Television and Radio Shows than any other Real Psychic-Medium in the United States, today. It gives his website and contact information on how to actually work with someone as Legitimate an Investigator & to me, That is really cool! Some of the chapters could have included technical equipment, however the Medium is the real tool for any Paranormal Investigation.

The information inside is "very" basic, but could be helpful to those interested in the Investigation Field of Parapsychology or the Armchair Ghost Hunter.
