ABSTRACT: Aleister Crowley (1875 – 1947) is one of the most colourful characters in the history of modern religion.

Book by Stephensen, P.R.
  • I didn't realize this was originally written in the 1920's to defend Crowley from his detractors. It does make one appreciate how talented Crowley was as a poet, how much he published. But he crossed swords with the OTO exposing their rituals, and this plus his non-conformist alternative viewpoints on religion & spirit naturally made him enemies, in whatever form of "establishment" you look at.

I see him much more now as a disruptive fermentative element introduced into the dying carcass of Empire and stuffy ritualistic society. Like Oscar Wilde, he paid a dear price for his rebellion; much of the bad press he got was from his enemies who resented his critiques. He has been overly defamed as a some kind of degenerate, almost as cultural disinformation so that you will not look at who he really was.

As a wag and a wit he loved tweaking his detractors, even proudly taking on the titles they gave him like Wicked Man in the World; much like hippies took up the label of "freak" to mock their critics. Since this book only covers an early period, and not his later years, I wasn't able to find out much as to whether he did truly decline into some perversity. Guess i might have to read Regardie's Eye in the Triangle...

  • All the paper reviews of said one Aleister Crowley.

  • I had my doubts about the book at first but as soon as I started reading I changed my mind. It is an extraordinary book about Aleister Crowley. Stephensen takes you on a tour through the life of Crowley, from beginning to end. What makes the book just right is the articles, which Stephensen has included, from journalists proposed and opposed to Crowley. You get a good look at what really was written about Crowley during his life, what people thought of his books, not everybody thought he was the most wicked man on earth. I really recommend this book for any one even slightly interested in Crowley. This book is a one of a kind.
