This is the third and final volume of North Atlantic Books’ hard cover edition of Dale Pendell's Pharmako trilogy, an encyclopedic study of the history and uses of psychoactive plants and related synthetics first published between 1995 and 2005. The books form an interrelated suite of works that provide the reader with a unique, reliable, and often personal immersion in this medically, culturally, and spiritually fascinating subject. All three books are beautifully designed and illustrated, and are written with unparalleled authority, erudition, playfulness, and range.Pharmako/Gnosis: Plant Teachers and the Poison Path focuses on plant-based and derivative psychedelic "teachers" (including ayahuasca, peyote, LSD, and DMT) and on the "poison path" of substances such as belladonna, ketamine, and ibogaine. Each substance is explored in detail, not only with information on its history, pharmacology, preparation, and cultural and esoteric correspondences, but also the subtleties of each plant's effect on consciousness in a way that only poets can do. The whole concoction is sprinkled with abundant quotations from famous writers, creating a literary brew as intoxicating as its subject. The Pharmako series includes the predecessor volumes Pharmako/Poeia (which covers tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, opiates, salvia divinorum, and other substances) and Pharmako/Dynamis (focusing on stimulants and empathogens).
  • This book is quite an adventure and a wonderful book for those who already have some knowledge of plants and their Latin names, uses and history. I highly recommend it to the intermediate student. A beginner may have a little trouble following but it is a well written text with a highly detailed section on each plant, genus, plant uses in history and in modern day times, as well as the occasional bit of trivia. In some places, it's almost as if the author has had a personal relationship with the spirit of each plant.

  • What an excellent and unusual book! The structure is unique, not for those who simply want to look up a plant and have it's effects and dosage listed in a chart. It's storytelling about each plant's guardian, and the free form description of it's effects gives you much to consider.

  • i highly recommend to anyone wanting to gain knowledge of forbidden or obscure dark plant poison path. great book! 2 thumbs up and a yeehaw.

  • Amazing author! Combines great poetry and straightforward descriptions and history of the plants. Definitely one of the most enjoyable series of books I have ever read.

  • A truly fabulous book for all you plant lovers out there.

  • These three books are beautiful.

Poetic, informative, sneakily subversive, and personal.

People looking for a straight textbook read might not like them as much, but I couldn't put them down.

  • I bought all three books, so I was able to read them consecutively without a break in between and I was enraptured for the entire time. Couldn't put them down. The third volume is perhaps the most exciting.

    Highly, highly recommended.

For mad men and women only.

  • It has definitely been a fascinating and entertaining journey into the history, science, and application of plant poisons and medicines. If you are just looking for a quick how to book, this is not the book for you.
