The book therefore controverts the Protestant contention that the Catholic reformation was a direct result of the Protestant movement and the attention is called to the abuses within the church. This book also asserts that the admitted evil conditions in the Church were not due to error in doctrine, as Protestants declare, but to faults in organization and laxity in discipline which the Church itself corrected. This is a scholarly contribution to church history by a Catholic theologian who is now the head of the English Department of Clermont-Ferrand University, France

  • I highly recommend Henri Daniel-Rops' The Catholic Reformation. After a quick study of the Protestant Reformation I found that it would be well to read even just a little bit about what the Catholic Church did in response to this movement. It was a pleasure to read, and being a Catholic myself I found that all was not lost (far from it) subsequent to all of the heresies and anti-Catholic movements that existed inside and outside of the church, from Arianism to the revolts in England, Germany, and France. According to Daniel-Rops, and rightly so, God reacted by raising up saints and highly educated theologians, like the Fathers, to answer the enemies of the church. The church was salvaged, but it also deserved something like the Reformation because, to be blunt, the church was corrupt. The Council of Trent is accurately portrayed. My excursion into the "history" of the church especially in relation to heresies and schisms has been to me quite fruitful. I myself am a specialist in Christian Origins. I usually do not study the Catholic Church beyond the Apostolic and Patristic eras. In truth, I think I won't be reading anymore histories of the church. My personal religion is still Catholic but as mentioned above it basically circles around scripture, the Apostles, their disciples, and the Fathers. I would recommend that anyone who is interested in the origins of the Catholic Church coming directly from Jesus and his circle should purchase The History of the Primitive (Early) Church by Lebreton and Zeiller. I really thought that it would be fun to jump into the Reformation, but instead I experienced one headache after the other. My Bayer Aspirin bottle is almost finished. I am being very frank and honest.

  • Slighty musty book, but fresh ideas from Daniel Rops!

  • As advertised

  • This a great work full of references and other sorces for additional information. The language is sometimes difficult for todays limited vocabulary, but when you realize that most of the reference material was penned in French at the time, it takes on the flavor of the times and increases your mental understanding of what was taking place as the Catholic Church deals with the material sins of the age. I found it to be the best historical account of the times I have read to date. Although it is over 300 pages it is a very brief account which allows the reader to explor any single part by use of the reference material. I recommend it for any serious researcher of the Catholic Church and the effect of not only the tirmoil from the reformers but also with in. Very interesting reading.

  • Good book. Very thorough.
