Peacocke argues that modern advances in molecular and evolutionary biology do not compel the view that all of biology will eventually be reduced simply to physics and chemistry. In rejecting this "reductionism," he argues for an "emergentism," the view that the human and personal actualizes itself through a process of continually developing hierarchical complexity. While Peacocke manages a balanced treatment of the reductionist view in biology, his own holistic approach to biology confirms his theistic conceptions.

Arthur Robert Peacocke MBE (29 November 1924 – 21 October 2006) was a British Anglican theologian and biochemist. Arthur Robert Peacocke was born at Watford on 29 November 1924. He was educated at Watford Grammar School for Boys, Exeter College, Oxford (BA 1945, MA 1948, BSc 1947, DPhil 1948, DSc 1962, DD 1982), and the University of Birmingham (DipTh 1960, BD 1971).
