A Great Historical Mystery... Finally Solved:Second century documents, such as The Sybilline Oracles and the Apocalypse of Peter, reveal a very big surprise. These documents show that the vast majority of second century Churches taught the doctrine of temporary punishment during their services. And this is not the only historical surprise. Other documents show that, out of the original six Christian theological schools, five of them taught their students the doctrine of temporary punishment as well.As a whole the historical record shows that, up until the fifth century, the doctrine of temporary punishment was the mainstream, majority view - the view of most laymen, most churches, and most theological institutions. However the historical record also reveals that, by the end of the fifth century, everything had suddenly and drastically changed. Almost all at once virtually every new Christian believed the exact opposite doctrine. By the end of the fifth century, new Christians were almost exclusively being taught the doctrine of eternal damnation in hell.So here is the great historical mystery: What happened in the fifth century that suddenly and dramatically changed the course of the Christian faith? The answer is shocking. And you can discover the shocking answer for yourself in The Jerome Conspiracy.
  • An interesting theory, and I've had long-term suspicions of how the various parts of Roman Catholic dogma evolved. For example, the sudden conversion of Constantine at the same time he came upon 10000 Christian troops has always been a source of amusement for me. Any military commander would have exclaimed, "I'm saved!"

But back to the book. It's interesting, but I find it a bit unfinished. There's a lot of sources at the back of the book -- I suspect to increase the page count.

Was it worth the price? Yeah. I've spent far more for far less.

  • The Jerome Conspiracy is a great addition to the other books I've been reading about the history of the early Christian church.

  • I found this book after being introduced to Christian Universalism for the first time. But I have found this book highly interesting and the story kept you attentative. While there are somethings about this book I disagree with, being the claim about Jude and Peter being uninspired or giving St. Jerome a bit too much blame. However this book pretty much is accurate about most everything else, including the belief about the Apokatastasis in the early Church days, Romes influence changing the original bible teachings, Origen, Clement of Alexandria, Gregory of Nyssa, Theodore of Montepusa, they are right on top historically. Funny thing is that I had that same experience that the couple had regaurding the scriptures and being shed light on the countless text referring to Universal salvation, and that difficult key word "Aion" which has been mistranslated for so long. As for the parable, I dont see any problem if the author wants to write in a style in the form of a "DaVinci Code" plot. It keeps you interested. Not to mention, it is all too true what happens in many denominations for questioning stuff and searching the answers for yourself.
PS. Please dont spam me, I read the bad reviews, and I am not really impressed about all the flack this book got. The book was more influencial than the bad reviews.

  • Wow! I can see how this book would be vehemently opposed, by even trashing the author's writing style, when there is a MUCH bigger issue here! And I must add that I saw nothing wrong with his style. Michael Wood kept my interest with the fictional storyline as well as challenging my evangelical foundation, and I am not one to be easily persuaded from something as basic eternal damnation. What changed my mind is that the claims in this book can easily be confirmed with a little homework.

I was born as a missionary kid in Nairobi, Kenya. I grew up in San Diego county as an avid member of my church youth group and as a student of the Word. In 1992 I graduated with honors from Oral Roberts University. Although I was not a theology student, I took some basic courses in both the New and Old Testament, and minored in Missions.

I remember telling my mother regarding issues that puzzled me about a contradiction in the scriptures that I learned in class, and I was pulled aside quickly. I was hushed in fear that someone else whose faith was weak might hear me. I was shocked at how my mother handled this. If there is a contradiction in the inerrant scriptures, then I wanted a rational explanation.

I still have my textbooks from these classes, and among other issues, my books confirm everything this book says about Second Peter's authorship, as well as issues regarding the Septuagint. The New Testament: A Student's Introduction by Stephen L. Harris (page 4) states that "...the New Testament writers... did not quote from the original Hebrew text. Instead they used a popular Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible...[the Septuagint]." Nothing I've ever seen before pointed out all of these discrepancies, nor that Jesus and New Testament authors quoted from the Septuagint, and NOT from the Babylonian version, which was used to translate the common modern Bible.

Another reason my interest was kept was that I am gay and also been disowned by much of my family. I will very likely send this book to my family. It's fascinating how the author ties all of this together, and I would love to see this turned into a movie, or even a sequel.

    Thank you Michael!

  • AT LAST THE GOSPELS ARE "GOOD NEWS". A GREAT BOOK WITH REFERENCES TO BACK UP THE CLAIMS PUT FORTH. FUNDAMENTALISTS WILL PROBABLY NOT LIKE IT, BUT THATS O.K.. READ IT WITH AN OPEN MIND AND DECIDE FOR YOURSELF. THE GOOD NEWS IT THAT JESUS DIED FOR ALL-MUSLIMS, BUDDHISTS, HINDUS, HOMOSEXUALS, ATHEISTS, EVEN ME AND YOU; AND HE DOESN'T NEED HELP FROM ANYONE LIVING TO ACCOMPLISH HIS WILL. ANOTHER GREAT READ IS "HOPE BEYOND HELL" BY GERRY BEAUCHEMIN. BEAUCHEMIN'S BOOK WILL HELP YOU IN THE FACE OF ATTACKS THAT WILL SURELY COME YOUR WAY IF YOU VOCALIZE WHAT IS IN THESE BOOKS.

  • If any book was seeking to address the Christian or biblical view of 'hell', then any which failed to deal with the two passages mentioning 'tormented day and night for ever and ever' (ch14 and 19) should not get high marks in any review. The portrayal of the Evangelical leaders clearly indicated he had met some but to my mind the author has not engaged at any reasonably academic level with any. The straw man arguments and the easy dismissal was a bit uncomfortable to read and detracted from any credibility the arguments had.

The book set out to cover (as would a blanket)the issue of hell and eternal torment but frankly turned out to be a napkin which left much uncovered and his thesis unproved.

  • I had been puzzled over the years that some things did not add up. And always wondered how a loving God could just toss people in hell and leave them there to suffer for eternity? Well, I wasn't surprised when I learned that mistranslation of the New Testament and Jerome pushing his agenda gave us what we have today.

  • excellent read. a very thought provoking book. I almost could not put it down. I learned a lot about history and what some of the early Christians believed. I highly recommend it.
