Hermaphrodeities: The Transgender Spirituality. It touched off a stormcloud of debate. The few hesitant transsexuals who bravely wrote in were shouted down by men and women who had a lot of opinions, but little in the way of experience.

Kaldera says that he has been a trans activist, a teacher of alternative relationships, a sex educator, a builder of bridges and a walker between worlds, and a troublemaker, for over two decades. He lives with his large crazy polyamorous family on a little homestead. Tis an ill wind that blows no minds.

Transgendered people have long been robbed of their own spiritual history, not knowing that there were once times and places where ours was considered a spiritual path in and of itself. This book explores both our spiritual history and our modern predicaments, shaping the outline of a contemporary spiritual path for those of us who don't fit into just one gender box. This revised and expanded edition of Hermaphrodeities features third gender myths, deities, personal and group exercises, community service project suggestions, rituals, and interviews with people from all over both the transgender spectrum. We are all sacred and it is time that the world knew it.
  • I gave it a 5-star rating because I can't give it an 11 out of 10 rating. As with his other books, Raven includes real-life examples from real people, and if there's a slight bit of fantasy thrown in, it's related and probably being done or been done by the people involved. This was the first book of his I'd ever read, and I'd quickly order several others in quick succession afterward.

This book includes work, real work to do. If you just got it for the essays and information, fine. It does include real work that may or may not be something you're ready for. I know that at this stage in my life, it affirmed a LOT of things for me, but I know that at any stage before this, my own dysphoria would have been triggered quite badly and things would not have gone well for me after reading it, or doing the exercises. Keep in mind, of course, that I'm living my life with the intent to never "transition" anything. It's a harder life, to learn to love yourself and the parts of your body you really don't want, while desperately wishing for the "right" ones. but as he says in the book; if your body matches someday, it doesn't automatically make you a happy, well-adjusted person, and it's NOT gonna fix your relationships or your self-esteem. That happens with work, not with some drugs or some surgeries.

Harsh truth, I know. Could I handle that in the beginning? No, but I knew it anyway and I had a decision to make; do I go with my heart and soul, or with the pressures of society that say I must be this, or that, to "really" be what I "claim." I chose ME over anything else.

There is a lot of good info in here for people who are transitioning, or for people who aren't, and for those of us born with our bodies in-between already, and who, for whatever reason, either don't, won't, or can't do anything about it. I for one, was born intersexed, but didn't know it until after puberty. Around puberty, I just thought I was a freak girl who didn't feel like a girl, and grew a beard. It doesn't change the fact that I'm a third gender chimera, woman-raised "other" man, and polyamorous husband. It doesn't change the fact that I bleed, but am otherwise sterile; that I have a vag and can't use it, and that I have a d*ck that, at least physically, is too small to do a whole lot. But this is MY body. I respect it, and won't do anything to harm it anymore. I've spent too many years killing myself through neglect, dissociation, and not getting the right help for other health issues all because doctors think I'm a "freak" and won't treat me for a simple COLD just because I have breasts and facial hair.

This book, while it won't give you ALL the answers (they don't exist, anyway), it can give you a d*mned good start.

  • This book is incredibly well-researched and has something to offer any spiritually-inclined trans person. I regularly found myself getting chills during my readings, and this book has helped me make considerable strides towards accepting myself as the delightfully complicated being I am. I have spent a lot of time trying to research a place for people like me in spiritual practice with little success, but Raven has gathered so much information and presented it conveniently in one book. I cannot begin to express how grateful I am to have this invaluable resource in my possession, as it is incredibly empowering.

  • As both a pagan and transgender person, I personally felt this book deserved more than 5 stars if I could give it that. This book was amazing read on many levels. this book was a very nice read.

The book includes a number stories about deities, mythological figures, and people who once lived who, at the vary least, messed with gender boundaries if not more than that. Deities who cross-dressed or were not strictly male nor female, people of days-gone-by who were or became other than strictly male or female for spiritual purposes, etc. Reading this book for that alone was an eye opening experience. Before reading this book, I knew of Hermaphroditus and Baphomet, and had been honoring Hermaphroditus for some time as a deity who might understand what it was like to be non-binary. However, I had yet to learn about the stories I learned about Dionysus, and had never thought of how Athena did not strictly fit a feminine role.

The usefulness and insightful nature of this book goes beyond this though. The book contains many questions the reader can contemplate over. More over, the book has rituals and activities one might want to take part in. This book certainly gave me any things to think about, and other things I wish to try out.

This book was the first book I have ever come across which gives people who are not strictly masculine and not strictly feminine their own “gender mysteries” to embrace. It also was the first which gave thoughts on how one’s gender identity and spirituality can merge and interact. I loved this book, and warmly recommend this book to those who might find its topic to their liking.

  • This is the best book about paganism and deity that I have ever read! Whether or not your intersexed, transgender, cis or somewhere in between this book has something for you. It has some very unique myths about transgender deities that are unavailable anywhere else. It's intelligent, interesting, spiritual, and well-thought out. Seriously, get this book.

  • Whether you're trans-identified or cisgendered this book will greatly benefit your practice. It offers insight into a spiritual realm that isn't often touched upon.

  • Haven't read every.page but it seems well.researched.

  • I just received my copy yesterday. i have some years being transgender and became very comfortable living in my new gender role thought I had everything figured out . I started reading this book yesterday many positive , hard , wonderful thoughts and emotions going through me . My eyes were opened I became aware of a whole new world that I am lucky enough to part of a sacred gender of my own neither male nor female and both male and female. I knew on a conscious level
but the book is reaching a deeper level in me . I feel this book was wrote for me and thank the spirits for people like Raven Kaldera . this book is worth reading and working through it is already giving me food for thought and feeding my soul as well.

  • This is a deeply meaningful book, bringing gods, goddess, and ritual to the transgender experience. It was amazing as a first read, along with the accompanying rituals. I keep it as a general reference and refer to it regularly.
