Series: Thorndike Large Print Gentle Romance Series (Book 2). Hardcover: 349 pages. I very much enjoyed the Rothschild Trilogy. The best part about Carola Dunn's novels is her emphasis on good character values as the basis for marriage. Her heroes have excellent characters that are revealed to the heroines in her historical romances. There is a light touch and a sweetness about her novels which make them most enjoyable.

I am sooooo glad that I found Carola Dunn ! I was desperately looking for a new author after reading all of Maeve Binchy's novels and I have always loved the Gothic Romance genre. Her unlikely savior was the dashing Lord Wyckham, who deemed it his duty to protect the young widow. Soon Laura found her esconced in his magnificent ancestral manor surrounded by his delightfully eccentic relatives.

Series: Thorndike Gentle Romance. Hardcover: 345 pages. I found this book did not hold my attention quite as much as other Regency romances by this author have done. It is just as well written and the plot is interesting but there was something lacking and the book did not quite gel for me. I sympathised with Miriam's impatience with the restrictions placed on women at the time and I liked the way the four travellers gradually settled into a workable relationship.

She had not sat out a single set, and whether the reason was her title, her large dowry, her new gown, or simply that it had been her ball, she had revelled in every moment.

She had not sat out a single set, and whether the reason was her title, her large dowry, her new gown, or simply that it had been her ball, she had revelled in every moment right as the memory struck her. Oh Lord, Lavinia and Fitz! Fitz had opened his mouth to say something that was bound to give her away. Quicker-witted, Lavinia had read the desperate plea in Jane’s face and gripped her brother-in-law’s wrist, silencing him. Please, I’ll explain later!.

PRODUCT DETAILS Title: One Night with His Virgin Mistress (Romance Large Print).

Alone, pregnant, and facing difficult financial strains after the death of her husband, Lady Laura Chamberlain is protected by her husband's cousin Lord Wyckham, who experiences unexpected feelings for the lovely widow.

I almost put the book down several times it got so annoying. The author created a large cast of secondary characters, which gave the story a lot of depth and richness. The two secondary romances - of Jane's companion and a lawyer she meets on that trip to London, and of Jane's maid with the hero's valet - were far more interesting, believable, and enjoyable than Jane's with the hero, and was what kept me reading the book. All of the characters who were in on Jane's lie kept urging her to tell the truth to Winter, the hero.

Lady Jane Brooke, left by her parents to molder in a North Country mansion, sets out for London in an ancient carriage. When it collapses, she and her lady-companion continue the journey by mail coach. Lost in a fog, they and the other passengers take refuge at the home of Lord Wintringham, where they are anything but welcome. The starchy lord takes Jane for a governess. When they meet again in London, Jane continues the masquerade and gradually finds out that Lord Wintringham is not half as frosty as he's been painted.
  • This book just did not live to expectations. When circumstances force Lady Brooke to travel in the mail coach and take refuge in the Earl of Wintringham’s estate and conceal her title and position, I thought I was in for such excitement. Lady Brooke, now plain Jane Brooke, would not be restricted by her position and would be herself and thaw the icy Ear (Yeah!)
The deception turned from exiting and novel to tedious, and downright unnecessary. The longer it lasted, the longer I found myself asking why this girl, who was presumably clever and full of gumption, could not come clean, especially in view of the complex and frustrating subterfuge it took to keep it going long after she left the Earl's estate. The h, very likable in the beginning turns into an irresolute, silly chit, while the H, reserved and self-asserting but intriguing, is nothing but wimpish in his inability to stand up to his aunt on may occasions. Most underwhelming is the end, so rushed and quickly wrapped up that any hopes of romance went out the window. I appreciated more the secondary romance between the lawyer and governess.
Tsk, tsk Ms. Carola Dunn, you have done much better in the past.

  • This book started out enjoyable and its' characters were likable, but the story lost its attraction in the last few chapters.

    Barebones plot:
Hero and heroine meet under awkward circumstances and the heroine gives conceals her true identity. But they obviously like each other. Late, they meet again in Town, and the heroine is too scared to reveal her true self.

I wish the denouement had occurred 2 or 3 chapters earlier, so that we'd be spared repeated example of Lady Jane hiding herself from Wintringham. The ruse went on for far too long. And then, in the end, the Earl got over the deception so easily that it made me want to throw my kindle against a wall. (I didn't).

Clearly, the hero's understanding of the heroine was completely false I wish the author had devoted at least two of the misspent chapters on re-establishing a new relationship for them.

Otherwise, the book was rather well-written.

  • Thought this was a great story, though I agree with one reviewer that I thought the masquerade went on a bit too long. That's why it got 4 stars instead of 5. But still a fun read. This is the first of Carola"s stories I've read. So I will be reading more, she writes well.

  • Great story, loved it. My only complaint about this authors stories is she never does an epilogue. I would like a small ending of the couple married and having a family. And knowing how much they pissed off their families by a quick wedding or not marrying the one they wanted them to. They tell each other they are in love and that's the end. Just feels a bit unfinished.

  • I'd be lying if I didn't say that I found the plot predictable at points but the characters are well drawn and have good chemistry. I liked them and liked reading about them. Definitely recommended.

  • Dunn at her bright, sparkling best....the romantic tension and the denouement equally enjoyable! Don't miss it! Wonderful, feisty heroine with heart .

  • This is another great Regency Romance from Carola Dunn. Why is his attitude toward the world so cold? Will she melt his reserves? Fun to read!

  • Sweet Story, One of her best. I enjoyed it very much
