Blackbird Sisters Book 02. Nancy Martin. Chapter 1. In the final weeks of her pregnancy, my sister Libby inexplicably took to wearing an enormous tie-dyed shirt that magnified her belly with a nauseating swirl of pink and green that seemed to depict a pair of lovesick whales. When she waddled into my kitchen at Blackbird Farm one crisp afternoon in October, I said, "Paint a peace sign on your stomach, and you'd pass for the Partridge family bu.

Read unlimited books and audiobooks on the web, iPad, iPhone and Android. Nora Blackbird comes from old money, but that money is essentially gone thanks to her parents' indiscretions. Now she works as a society columnist, attending parties and fundraisers with the still-rich. Then there is all the jewelery that has been stolen over the years from the women who have attended/given parties where the dead woman has been in attendance.

Martin's storytelling reminds me some of Janet Evanovich and her Stephanie Plum series, outlandish characters that work so well, a tough-as-nails heroine juggling love and stopping criminals, and a great sense of humor pervading the mystery. I'm definitely going to be reading the rest of this series.

When a high society jewel thief winds up drowned at the bottom of a pool with a tacky garden gnome tied to her ankles, Nora must swing into action to save her old flame from a hasty murder charge.

  • I love the protagonist who deals with her crazy family in a loving way. She does not see herself as better than those without pedigree, yet she finds ways to use her socal connections to help the wrongly accused. The leading man is strong and knowledgeable of ways to bend the rules. The only thing I would suggest is to have the there sisters do the crazy break-in with remote help from Michael. Don't suggest Mick get caught in silly situations.

  • I really liked most of this cozy mystery. It personifies the fun "beach read". The characters are very likeable and the story moves right along.

However, I did not care for the stereotyping of the gay characters. There were three that actually made appearances, albeit short. One was a jeweler who was a Truman Capote knock-off ("the little queen"). The others were two guys who were, of course, florists. And they even wore identical shoes....!? I can't imagine why the straight guys in the book made fun of them behind their backs.

Even though most people who read this would tell me to "relax" and not take such things to heart--they should be reminded how "innocent" stereotyping of African Americans in the forties and fifties was something with which we finally did away--with the help of some raised consciousness.

Do I recommend it. Absolutely. I'll give it three and a half stars. Nora Blackwood is a sassy, classy protagonist and her sisters play off her and each other wonderfully.

  • The second book in the Blackbird Sisters' mystery series finds Nora Blackbird escalating her romance with Mick; investigating jewelry thefts; delivering babies (and contemplating one of her own?); solving murders; and trying to clear an old flame - Flan Cooper's name.
Nancy Martin does it again with lots of wit and great dialogue. The characters are funny and somewhat dysfunctional.
My one criticism (and it's a big one) which only made me give it 4 stars was when Nora shouts out that one threatening word as she is fighting for her life....."polyester!" Pleaassse. There is a point where too much wit makes it absurd. And Nancy Martin's editors should have stopped her with that one.
In spite of this absurdity, I will definitely read the next Blackbird Sisters book.
On a positive note, one area that Ms. Martin explains very well in this second book is why Nora has never learned to drive.

  • Dead Girls don't wear Diamonds, these Blackbird Sister's are up to their beautiful necks in trouble again. This author writes marvelous, tasty novels. A little murder, feisty women, interesting men and a good plot. once again Nora finds herself solving a murder and trying to stay out of harms way. She almost doesn't make it. Read this one its a corker.

  • What I expected.

  • Second book in the series and I loved it. Fast paced story, learned more about the sisters and love how they are there for each other. Even when it was decided that they needed to break into a home in the middle of the night to look for evidence, a very pregnant sister showed up to help out and ended up going into labor! Don't want to give away any details, but this is a fun read. Can't wait to read the next book.

  • I like mysteries with familiar surroundings and next door people around. (Eve if the author created a character that belongs to the former old money class).
This is my second favorite after savannah Reid series and before Hanna Swenson series. ;)

  • If you have not discovered the Blackbird Sisters series you do not know what you are missing. I have all seven (7) on my kindle and am on number four (4) presently. I can not put the books down. The sisters quickly become real and I have laughed and cried through each book!!! Try them you will not be sorry!!!
