A Passionate Performance - Eileen Putman

A Passionate Performance - Eileen Putman. PUTMAN: A Passionate Performance. On stage, she became someone else - a woman with passions that bubbled over without a care for society’s strictures, a grand lady with a comfortable life and servants to command, a princess awaiting rescue from a love-struck knight. Real life was not like that. It was about changing one’s clothes behind a dingy screen and hoping for a modicum of privacy, trying desperately to scrape together the funds to keep William at school, sharing a bed with another actress in a cramped room in a bawdy boarding house.

Signet Books was an imprint of the New American Library (NAL), which was established as an autonomous American publishing house after branching off from its British-based parent company, Penguin Books. Signet had the longest running Regency series, beginning in the late 1970s and ending in February 2006. It generally published three books each month, though this varied over the years. Signet also produced reissues, both of their own previous releases as well as those of other publishers.

You can’t throw a stone in the historical romance category without hitting a regency romance novel. There are, at a conservative estimate, approximately 85 million regency books at any given period. More come out practically every day; it’s by far the most popular historical sub-genre. Officially it occupies only the narrow slot between 1811 and 1820, when King George IV was Prince Regent. Enterprising authors have, however, managed to make it stretch from roughly 1800 to the 1830s (until Victoria comes along in 1837). Below is a selection of 15 of the best regency romance novels, which range.

Devenham looked at Phoebe in shock, thoroughly appalled at what he had done. He stepped back from her, still staring. She stood absolutely still, apparently frozen in horror. She stood absolutely still, apparently frozen in horror ife had he so regretted a kiss; he was not certain he had ever regretted one before now. If I offered a thousand apologies, it would not be enough, he said miserably. After all that you and Allington and Lady Allington have done for me-this, this is how I repay you!.

A poor but beautiful actress, Miss Sarah Armistead agrees to pose as the latest conquest of a cynical, handsome rake for money's sake, but as she begins to succumb to her employer's charms, she finds it hard to keep up the ruse. Original.
  • In this book, acting the part is what the parties do.
Finding that the part is not all of what they are is the essence of the plot.

  • I'm afraid the performance is neither interesting nor passionate. The story is contrived and incredible. After reading several disappointing books with raving reviews, I'm getting wary about buying books which are written by relatively new and unknown wirters.

  • Lord Justin Linton's father was licentious and downright mean to both his son and wife. The senior Linton is killed by a jealous "unknown" lover and the mother takes her own life. Before passing, senior Linton had somehow instilled the belief of an "eye for an eye" into his son. Therefore, Lord Linton spends his adult years planning the confession and downfall of the woman who took his father's life and caused his mother's suicide.

Lord Linton hires Miss Sarah Armistead, a wellborn-lady-actress-by-necessity, to help recreate events and circumstances leading to his father's death. Although Linton is rather dark and cold, we see an occasional flicker of good. Sarah seeks to reach him and free his soul from misguided revenge.

There are some implausible situations (of course) and Lord Linton's vulnerabilities might have been better developed along with the story's resolution but, as far as Regencies go, this one was not bad or great; the writing flowed well and it kept my interest. 3 1/2 stars
