I liked this much more than the last book that I read by Bonnie Dee, Finding Home, though there were some striking similarities. Both books have male MCs that are the "damsel in distress," if you will, and need rescuing from the female MC. Both men were abused and broken, emotionally and psychologically. However, in this book, the power discrepancy didn't feel as large between the MCs, and I found myself able to enjoy the story much more.

Bonnie Dee. Though she’d known Tom for only a short time, the bond between them ran strong and deep. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to call it love. Did she love him? Could she find him and bring him home?

Bonnie Dee. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to call it love come with her if she found him? She stood reading and re-reading the six word note as if it might change before setting it down on the table at last. She wiped her hands over her face, clearing her eyes, trying to clear her head. Okay, this was not a problem. How far could he have gotten in a few hours? She would find him, talk to him and make him see reason.

Love plumbs deep below the surface. In 1946, Sarah, a grieving war widow goes to the carnival with friends and is riveted by the tattooed man in the freak show, adorned in head to toe body art. Later she discovers the man hiding in her hayloft, escaped from imprisonment by the evil owner.

Deep ruts led from up a dirt track to the road. The carnival had moved on, but the memory of the tattooed man lingered. She felt as if something precious had been snatched away from her, like the brass ring on a carnival ride always just out of reach.

What a lovely, sweet, touching story <3. You know that wonderful feeling you get when you just sink into a well-written read? Well, I totally got that with this book. The writing style is strong, fluid and evocative and draws you right into the story. I have to say I was hesitant to start this one because, just personally, I hate carnivals and I wasn’t sure if this was a carnival-centric stor. o, just to set the record straight: it isn’t. Daughter of the President of the Free Worlds, Leelah has spent her life protected by a security force. Bonnie Dee. Bloodlines merge, passions surge. Magical Menages, Book 2 One riveting glance from the handsome stranger stalking her in the supermarket shakes Akila Massri down to her soul. And when Jacob Baum hands her an engraved invitation to visit his billionaire employer’s retreat, curiosity-and the need to pay off her student loans-overcomes the instinct to refuse.

Bone Deep THIS was an absolute find! What a treasure of a book, and even though it’s considered a short (248 pages) it was long enough to absolutely consume me for quite a few hours, and had just enough of everything for me to be 100% focused completely on this story

Bone Deep THIS was an absolute find! What a treasure of a book, and even though it’s considered a short (248 pages) it was long enough to absolutely consume me for quite a few hours, and had just enough of everything for me to be 100% focused completely on this story. Now it wasn’t the first time I heard about it. When I raved about Finding Home (that unorthodox story had me riveted) many chimed in and let me know that Bonnie Dee had a few other gripping tales up her sleeve. This being one that was most often recommended

Bonnie Dee. Love sees deep below the surface. In the aftermath of WWII, widowed Sarah is dragged to a carnival by friends where she's riveted by the unearthly gaze of the tattooed man in the freak show. Deeply drawn to the quiet yet powerfully magnetic man, Sarah fights her attraction while learning about his mysterious past and gentle nature.

  • "She loved this man, his simplicity and sweetness, and nothing else mattered."

I was really looking forward to this story. I have an affinity for circus/carnival themed love stories. I had a hard time at first warming up to the hero (took awhile to establish his personality) and heroine (I'm not particularly fond of overconfident, badass women), but I liked their story, and I liked their start.

Some of the descriptions in the book were just flawless! For example:

"In the hushed darkness beneath the canvas, each display was iluminated by a single bulb. The dim light cast odd shadows, adding to the gloomy atmosphere of the stiflinf tent. Heat from earlier in the day was trapped in the airless enclosure. The smell of unwashed bodies and cow manure was rank."

    That's a great description!

    Here's another I love:

"It was as if he saw and marked her pain, still percolating underneath the veneer of dull ennui. His scalpel gaze hurt as it cut through her scars."

    Chills!

My one complaint is more from a personal preference and should in no way dissuade anyone from reading this love story. The story is very low angst, minimal conflict, and kinda anticlimactic (for my own preference). I feel like there was a LOT of suggested potential conflict, and there were a LOT of opportunities for conflict, but the reader was never quite taken there. That was a little disappointing, only because it seemed like the characters got off a little easy, in spite of the reader being told to expect hard times and "storms."

  • Bone Deep has been on my Kindle for over 5 years forgotten until recently when a GR friend read it and loved it. I'm so thrilled that I gave it a chance because it was really a beautiful story. Sarah is a young widow still mourning her husband who died in the war. Although her friend insist on her moving on she still can't make that jump. That is until the circus comes to town and she walks into the side show and sees a young man covered from head to toe in tattoos. I loved Sarah, she was a lovely woman with so much love to give and I loved watching her give into her desires for Tom. She saw the beauty on the inside and loved him no matter what others thought of her. Tom was also a wonderful character. He has lived as a prisoner in the circus by the man who tattooed him. He barely is able to read and is a simply young man who dreams of having a normal life with a wife and child but knows he is to strange looking to fit in. Since the setting for this book is on a farm in a small town in the 40's you can imagine her choice of a new young man is not welcomed nor is her living in sin. So if your looking for a sweet read that at times makes your heart ache but leaves you with a warm feeling I totally recommend this one.

  • Bone Deep is one of those books that I don't think I would have picked up without a recommendation from one of my followers. This weekend I was in a bit of a book funk and two little birdies told me I should give this one a try. I am so so glad that I did! It was a BEAUTIFUL love story!

This is a unique and heartwarming tale of unconventional romance. My heart broke for Tom; he had endured a life of abuse and spent his adult life on display like an animal. I loved Sarah because she was able to look past Tom's appearance and background and help him to heal and move on with life. It truly was one of the most exquisite love stories I have picked up in a long time.

I instantly loved Sarah because she did not live her life centered on what others thought or would think. As a young widow, she was independent, spunky and I would say she had a wild streak for the time period. When she first sees Tom on display at the carnival, she sees him differently than others and there is something about him that she cannot take her eyes off of. She didn't just like him because he was different or dangerous; she felt some strange, unexplained connection. She did not fear him.

Tom is one of those male characters that will forever be in my heart. He was not an arrogant alpha male by any means but he was a sweet, kind, unique man who I am still thinking about days later. Listening to his story, his hopes and his dreams made my heart lurch. He carries around a magazine picture of a family and creates a whole story about their lives which he shares with Sarah. It shows how much he has missed out on in life and was one of the saddest moments in the book. With Sarah, he must learn to accept that he is beautiful and worthy of love. He deserves a normal life like the one in his magazine picture.

Their budding romance is not without obstacles. They must overcome the judgement of small town 1940's America. Can you imagine what the view was of a completely tattooed man back in those days? Even today I think someone completely covered in tattoos would get a glare or two. Then there is the issue of Tom never having a girlfriend or social interactions outside the carnival. He must learn everything and I mean everything.

I highly suggest Bone Deep for anyone looking for a beautiful love story with a little bit of suspense and drama. It is guaranteed to put a smile on your face when it is all said and done!
