George D. Aiken, an independent- minded Republican who represented Vermont for 34 years in the United States Senate, died yesterday in a nursing home in Montpelier, Vt. He was 92 years old and had been in failing health for several months. Mr. Aiken, a vintage Yankee of the old school, earned a reputation as a maverick whose championship of liberal legislation often won him the enmity of members of his own party. He summed up his experiences in those endeavors in two books, ''Pioneering With Fruits and Berries'' and ''Pioneering With Wildflowers. In 1930, he was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives, in which three generations of Aikens had served.
