Marine Biology been extremely useful in bridging the gap between students that lacked expertise in the marine field and gaining valuable insights to be successful in my classes. This is one of the few texts that has allowed me a more direct pathway for teaching students that have a limited background in the subject matter. - Michael Franklin, California State University Northridge. This text approaches the eclectic topic of marine biology as a combination of functional biology of organisms and ecology.
I like your new Marine Biology book
I like your new Marine Biology book. It's the first appropriate-level text I have found for undergraduate students, very readable and well illustrated. I tried four different texts over the past five years, and this is the first one that the students and I agree is quality. Levinton gives a good introduction to the physical factors in diverse marine environments, and really shines when describing the physiological, functional and morphological characteristics that have been shaped by these environments. Malcolm Schick, University of Maine. The book is full of many good examples and illustrative material.
Designed for one-semester junior/senior courses, this established volume stands as one of the most current and thorough resources for students in the multidisciplinary field of marine biology.

Marine biology is a hybrid subject that combines aspects of organismal function, ecological interaction and the study of marine biodiversity. The earliest studies of marine biology trace back to the Phoenicians and the Greeks who are known as the initial explorers of the oceans and their composition. The first recorded observations on the distribution and habits of marine life were made by Aristotle (384–322 BC).
