Marine Biology been extremely useful in bridging the gap between students that lacked expertise in the marine field and gaining valuable insights to be successful in my classes. This is one of the few texts that has allowed me a more direct pathway for teaching students that have a limited background in the subject matter. - Michael Franklin, California State University Northridge. This text approaches the eclectic topic of marine biology as a combination of functional biology of organisms and ecology.

I like your new Marine Biology book

I like your new Marine Biology book. It's the first appropriate-level text I have found for undergraduate students, very readable and well illustrated. I tried four different texts over the past five years, and this is the first one that the students and I agree is quality. Levinton gives a good introduction to the physical factors in diverse marine environments, and really shines when describing the physiological, functional and morphological characteristics that have been shaped by these environments. Malcolm Schick, University of Maine. The book is full of many good examples and illustrative material.

Designed for one-semester junior/senior courses, this established volume stands as one of the most current and thorough resources for students in the multidisciplinary field of marine biology.

Marine biology is a hybrid subject that combines aspects of organismal function, ecological interaction and the study of marine biodiversity

Marine biology is a hybrid subject that combines aspects of organismal function, ecological interaction and the study of marine biodiversity. The earliest studies of marine biology trace back to the Phoenicians and the Greeks who are known as the initial explorers of the oceans and their composition. The first recorded observations on the distribution and habits of marine life were made by Aristotle (384–322 BC).

Written by one of the most highly respected researchers in marine biology, this text is the most current and accessible treatment of all aspects of this interdisciplinary field. Marine Biology aims to heighten students' inherent fascination with the ocean and marine life and describes in an easily understandable manner the biological principles which govern marine biological systems. It introduces the rich diversity of the marine environment by focusing on three major themes: 1) function, the way organisms solve problems and the chemical and physical factors affecting these solutions; 2) biodiversity, an overview of the various life forms in the ocean; and 3) ecology, the interaction of organisms with their environment. Designed for undergraduate courses at the sophomore to senior level, the book is designed to help students approach a great variety of material. Supplemented by suggestions for further reading, a glossary of important terms, text boxes highlighting significant equations and concepts, review questions at the end of each chapter, and an abundance of illustrative examples and visual material, this text is a fascinating introduction to marine biology which is both accessible to and captivating for students of marine biology, marine ecology, and marine science.
  • I had to get this book for my Marine Biology class. The book was easy to understand and written in a language that was easy to follow. It had many examples to make the subject matter clearer.

I used the amazon rental service for this book and am really satisfied at how smoothly it worked. The book shipped very fast. The return process was very easy as well. I printed out a label and dropped the book of at the closest post office. I would definitely rent books from amazon again.

  • I had to purchase this book for a class I took recently, and I think it did a fairly good job of summarizing the basics of marine biology. It includes colorful illustrations and examples of contemporary data from published papers (which I think more textbooks should include). Obviously, now for class you'd probably be required to buy the newer edition of the book, but if you're just interested in the subject, this is a good read.

  • It made marine bio more enjoyable

  • Very good conditions

  • Bought this book for my grandson who was planning to go into marine biology. It appeared to me to be a comprehensive text book.

  • Good text book, needed it for a class.

  • It's an interesting and engaging book. It gives lots of details, examples, and pictures but it isn't overwhelming.

  • I used this book for a class, and really enjoyed reading it. I also love that it's a paperback - much more lightweight and (hopefully) helped bring the price down.
