There is something about wildflowers that touches us in a place too deep for words. A single flower, especially one at home in the wild, can take us back to seeing with the fresh eyes of a child; a whole landscape bursting with bloom can move us to laughter and tears of gratitude. It’s almost impossible not to smile in the presence of a flower, not to feel more vital, more real.

  • I've lived in Northern California my entire adult life and have been involved in native plants for decades, and I consider this one of the worst native wildflower books I've ever seen (and I've seen and owned many, many such books).

First of all, the photos are terrible, for the most part (many are not sharp, or clear, or even in focused, and they are not reproduced well in this book). But beyond the photo quality, this book has a basic problem with using the "monthly" approach, since almost all California wildflowers can be found blooming over a period of months.

Then there is the implied idea that this guide is actually representative of California wildflowers in general. There are orders of magnitude more native flower species blooming in California (in any one month), than are shown in this book, and in fact an individual is very likely to not find in this book, the species they are observing out of doors.

In addition, the location and month indicated in this guide, are not always accurate. For instance, the beautiful yellow calochortus, "calochortus monophyllus" is a flower you can (according to this book) find at Table Mountain (near Oroville, CA), but the truth is that you will NOT find this flower at the Table Mountain preserve. You may find it near there, along the roadside, but not at the Table Mountain preserve itself. Furthermore, this particular reserve contains hundreds of native plant species, and you might think the author could at least point out one native wildflower that is actually on the preserve, itself.

I have owned and read scores of nature books published by the University of California, and while some offer interesting text, for the most part their reproduced photography is below average and often useless for identification. I have no idea why this is the case, by the way.

In conclusion, you're wasting your money if you buy this "guide". You would be much better served by joining your local native plant society and taking part in their plant hikes, where you will learn much about identifying and appreciating the actual species of wildflowers in your area of California.

  • I like that there are two indexes, one with common names and one with scientific names. The pictures are pretty high contrast, so they're not especially helpful...but they're ok. Not a deal breaker.
It's nice to have the flowers organized by month of bloom, but the month of bloom may not fit your region, so you might want to look at the months before and after. Also I would like it if they were organized by color in each section for when you're trying to find something you've seen out there. But if you're just browsing to see what's blooming, it's fine.
It has a section to highlight flowers growing in specific regions which is nice to review.

Addendum: Early this month I took this book on an extended camping trip across a few locations. I brought this book along and discovered the real value of it. Because it lists areas that the flowers can be found, it is easy to look for likely candidates for what you're trying to ID. It certainly doesn't have ALL the flowers in it, but I was able to easily ID quite a few of the new-to-me flowers that I encountered in some unfamiliar locations we visited. I've decided to buy another copy for a friends birthday that's coming up soon.

  • This is a really good wildflower book that I have added to my collection. Those looking for a color-coded finder might be disappointed, but it is exactly what it purports to be: a month by month guide. I wanted something that tells me what is blooming where (and when to go). Blackwell is well regarded in his field and is a photographer as well. He reveals his "secret places" so - please respect them and don't pick or trample the flowers (so we can enjoy them next year and in the years to come). I hope this compilation leads to an appreciation and conservation of the magnificent wildflowers of California.(By the author of A PLACE IN THE WORLD

  • I'm not that thrilled with this book. For one thing, the most of the photos are not all that helpful for identifying wildflowers, as most of them capture the entire shrub and the flowers in the photo are so small it makes it difficult to compare with the flower I am trying to ID. Also, the categorizing by month seems ridiculous, since so many flowers can be blooming over a period of more than just one month. Categorizing by color would have made this book much easier to use.

  • Some of the photos are hard to make out but it was still nice to see them by month.

  • Already used much information from there to find nice walks around bay area for flowers

  • Very expansive

  • Unique and interesting way to learn about wildflowers month by month.
