Molecular genetic variation was examined within and among species of the rock-dwelling cichlid fishes (mbuna) of Lake Malawi. Phylogenetic relationships among mbuna mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplotypes were estimated by using -length polymorphisms. A species flock is an accumulation of a relatively large number of closely related .
A species flock is an accumulation of a relatively large number of closely related species confined to a narrowly circumscribed area. From: Encyclopedia of Inland Waters, 2009. Currently, evolutionary radiations known as species flocks affect very specific clades in relatively limited geographical areas, generally a lake or a small series of lakes. The species complexes present a reticulate evolution with cases of phenotypic convergence, as has been demonstrated for some Ciscoes in North America and coregones in Europe.
