Start by marking Organic Chemistry as Want to Read: Want to Read savin. ant to Read. By using mechanisms as the organising factor, Joseph Hornback's introduction to Organic Chemistry teaches undergraduates the basics of reactions and chemistry in a succinct fashion. Examples are included from biochemistry and industry.

Organic chemistry is a subdiscipline of chemistry that studies the structure, properties and reactions of organic compounds, which contain carbon in covalent bonding. Study of structure determines their chemical composition and formula. Study of properties includes physical and chemical properties, and evaluation of chemical reactivity to understand their behavior.

ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Second Edition - the first mechanistic-oriented book written at a level that organic chemistry students will understand! Specifically, the focus on mechanisms is a unifying theme, rather then just an organizing principle. Organizationally mainstream, it is unique in bringing in mechanisms as a unifying principle, and reactions are organized by mechanism type not by functional groups. And now, text/media integration has never been so seamless with the introduction of Organic ChemistryNow for ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Second Edition.
  • I have purchased 4 Organic Chemistry textbooks searching for the one that would help me understand the mechanics of the various reaction mechanisms. THIS BOOK WAS EXCELLENT at explaining one of the hardest concepts I have had to learn in Organic Chemistry, REACTION MECHANISMS and how/why they work.

NOTE: This author is not as clear and concise when explaining some of the basics, but if you have had a good inorganic chemistry class you don't really need it. If you haven't then get 'Organic chemistry as a second language' and review.

  • The paper is so thin that you can see right through it to the printing on the other side and the page behind it. extremely distracting when trying to study

  • This is my favorite book for my favorite class. I spent a lot of quality time with book on Friday nights, doing homework. We have a special bond that can never be broken. Expensive book but don't regret making the purchase.

  • great price for college student who needed it for school

  • Good deal

  • Exactly what I wanted was basically new

  • This is a pretty standard Organic Chemistry text. The book provides good explanations, suitable graphics and a nice cross reference of information.

  • I used Hornback's 2nd edition for my introductory organic chemistry courses and found the text to be excellent, and often surpassing the in-class instruction I recieved from my professor. If you are an undergraduate student taking organic chemistry I would recommend this text above all others. I often refer to it as a reference now that I am taking advanced organic chemistry. If you read the this text, you will do well in your course regardless of the calibre of instruction you are recieving.
