Taylor begins with & before the Saxons'. For example, Taylor emphasises that settlement occurred in the Dorset valleys despite the majority of the remaining evidence of man's prehistoric presence being on the hills. He also points out that settlements contracted before and not because of the arrival of the Saxons. Taylor, whilst recognising the distinctiveness of the county's landscape, surprisingly does not seem to want to consider the effects of its distinctiveness within a wider context.

The Making of the English Landscape is a 1955 book by the English local historian William George Hoskins. It is illustrated with 82 monochrome plates, mostly photographs by Hoskins himself, and 17 maps or plans. The book is a landscape history of England and a seminal text in that discipline and in local history. The brief history of some one thousand years is widely used in local and environmental history courses.

Some books have a reputation that precedes them. I'd been meaning to read The Making of the English Landscape ever since my first degree. It's an acknowledged classic in a discipline which has very few. Given that context, it's probably no surprise that in some ways it couldn't live up to my expectations. That said, the book did make me want to get out and look at different landscapes through fresh eyes and it was good that it wasn't all rural but looked at towns, canals and industry too. Geographically it concentrates on the Interesting, if dated, narrative history of the development of the English landscape.

World Book Day celebrates books, extraordinary books that transport us, that take us beyond ourselves - but to a recognisable place. Often we are ambushed by the words, words that touch us and unlock our heart. He writes in 'The Making of the English Landscape': " The English landscape itself, to those who know how to read it aright, is the richest historical record we possess. There are discoveries to be made in it for which no written documents exist, or have ever existed". At college, his book inspired me to go out and seek the myriad hidden stories held within ordinary farmsteads and fields.

Oonagh created the most beautiful flower arrangements for our wedding day in July ours of the arrangements and bridal flowers were prettier than I could have ever imagined. The marquee looked stunning, we had many compliments from our guests! Oonagh is very talented and goes above and beyond, nothing was too much trouble!

His most influential work was The Making of the English Landscape, a chronological survey of English history traced through the physical evidence of buildings and field patterns which many people could see but did not necessarily know how to decode.
