Billion Year Spree: The True History of Science Fiction. This is not so much a true history of science fiction as it is a history-spanning piece of literary criticism of SF.

Billion Year Spree: The True History of Science Fiction. And this is not a bad thing, especially speaking from a time some 26 years after the book was published. As a history of an ongoing phenomenon, those missing years up to the present day would steeply diminish the value of this book.

Trillion Year Spree book. It was an update of his earlier Billion Year Spree, and I am only sorry that Brian Aldiss hasn’t done a Gazillion Year Spree yet. He is JOIN ME AND TOGETHER WE CAN RULE THE GALAXY! The tenacity of poor SF is renowned. Billion Year Spree started out as my 'bathroom book' - usually a work of non-fiction interesting enough to keep me from terminal boredom there, but not one I want to read straight through to the end. His first book, The Brightfount Diaries, was published in 1955.

I first read Billion Year Spree by mistake. When a new Brian Aldiss hardback appeared, I made sure I was first in the queue - only to find that it wasn't a novel, but a history of science fiction itself. It was the mid-1970s, and I was working a shift at my local public library. The pay was low, but the company was good and I managed to get first pick of the new science fiction novels as they arrived. Disappointed, I ploughed into it anyway and discovered that it wasn't the dry tome I had feared but a witty, intensely personal discussion of the genre

BILLION YEAR SPREE: A History of Science Fiction. Aldiss presents an intelligent history of science fiction from Mary Shelly to 1973. Especially interesting is his comparison of two early sf giants, . Wells and Edgar Rice Burroughs.
