The casebook provides the latest in data analysis techniques, and includes a discussion of JMP and Minitab commands. Developed at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, it is used for the second semester of a beginning statistics course for MBA students.

Preface Statistics is seldom the most eagerly anticipated course of a business student. It typically has the reputation ofbeing aboring, complicated, and confusing mix of mathematical formulas and computers. Our goal in writing this casebook and the companion volume (Basic Business Statistics) was to change that impression by showing how statistics gives insights and answers interesting business questions. Rather than dwell on underlying formulas, we show how to use statistics to answer questions. Each case study begins with a business question and concludes with an answer. Formulas appear only as needed to address the questions, and we focus on the insights into the problem provided by the mathematics. The mathematics serves a purpose. The material is organized into 12 "classes" of related case studies that develop a single, key idea of statistics. Although later cases in these notes suggest this complexity, we do not begin that way. Each class has one main idea, something big like standard error. We begin a class by discussing an application chosen to motivate this key concept, and introduce the necessary terminology.
  • This is one of the most useless and disgusting books known to mankind. Not only is it a horrible way to explain business statistics, it is written in size 14 font with huge spacing and graphs from the 1980s. About 2% of the book has actual math and calculations, which is great for those who hate math but how do you explain statistics with a bunch of nonsensical words?

    I thought about condensing this book for the publishers and in my mind, it would be about 10 two-sided pages on 8.5in x 11in papers. But hey, if the author wants to provide more pages, my yearly textbook bonfire will only last twice as long. Oh, and this book is worth its value, at least when I purchased it at $5. For $5, you get 348 pages of firewood. What a steal!

  • This casebook was originally published about a decade ago and the data for the cases came in a format not easily used after downloading. The format may have been updated to a more modern one but I was not successful in opening the files for use in Excel or SPSS, which is what my students use.

  • This book is great. It explains everything in layman's terms. Very easy to read and understand!

  • This book has an interesting premise of focusing statistics for business at the mid-level using the JMP software. The concepts addressed are the right ones, even the order is good.
    However, on the downside, it is very difficult to read. The cases are not well explained. This book is used at Wharton's 1st year core course in statistics and the general agreement is that it is very hard to comprehend it. I recommend an editor to the authors.

  • I did not purchase this item, I canceled it with the seller and thus never received the product. I am not pleased with how Amazon does not provide their contact number on their website for customers that have issues they need help with. This is not a reflection on the seller, I no longer plan on making purchases through Amazon.com becuase of the inability to get an immediate hold of anybody to get assistance with issues.
