I've had three consecutive semesters of math using Pearson text books and Pearson MyMathLab, before taking Statistics using Cengage materials. In comparison, the content by Cengage is confusing and harder to interpret. My goal is to gain an intuitive understanding of the subject through practice and repetition from the practice exercises in each chapter.

It's not easy, and not particularly exciting, either. This book doesn't exactly bring loads of fun to the subject, but it explains concepts well, provides pertinent examples, and offers plenty of useful practice problems.

Book Description ESSENTIALS OF STATISTICS FOR BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS, FOURTH EDITION is an introductory stats textbook that emphasizes statistical concepts and applications. The discussion and development of each technique is presented in an application setting, with the statistical results providing insights to decisions and solutions to problems. The easy-to-follow presentation style and problem-scenario approach clearly show how to apply statistical methods in practical business situations. This brief introduction to business statistics balances a conceptual understanding of statistics with the real-world application of statistical methodology. The essentials version features selected core topics from the authors? market-leading STATISTICS FOR BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS, NINTH EDITION presented in 13 chapters. It includes the highly-regarded strengths of the longer text, including the problem-scenario approach that uses real-world examples to introduce stat techniques. Methods, Applications, and Self-Test exercises include hundreds of problems based on real data. Examples and exercises throughout focus on ways that stats contribute to improving the quality of products and services. This text can also be computer integrated at the discretion of the instructor.
  • I'm taking Intro to Statistics. The custom title (paperback, university name on the cover, only $120 new or $90 used at the campus book store) is missing two chapters from this hard cover version, and the remaining pages in the custom edition weren't even re-numbered to close the gap left by the missing chapters. Weird. This book was identical except for its being complete, and it's a hard cover version. There were a few ink marks on some of the pages, but not much. It set me back $1 for the book and $4 for shipping.

  • This book is OK, but very overpriced. It's heavy with glossy pages, and is a real back breaker in a school bag. The examples are ok, but don't explore concepts very far or in depth. I often found myself thinking, "what about this case, or what about this case?" and couldn't find any satisfactory answers. It's definitely an introduction book to stats.

It has answers to odd-numbered problems in the back. The solution manual for this is not great, and only covers questions the even-numbered problems. How this makes sense, I have no idea.

It has some quick reference equations on the inside covers, which is definitely a nice touch. But save some money, buy it used. It is by no means a classic text.

  • I got a 4.0 by just reading the book. I didn't show up to class and just went on exam days. The teacher listed the 13th edition as the required however the 10th edition was good enough.

  • Not as good as the other textbooks I bought. I've taken calculus, read a very basic intro to probability, and I flipped through this book and did not think it looked very informative. Maybe some business people will like it. But if you really want to learn probability, I would recommend Introduction to Probability Theory With Contemporary Applications. It covers more meat and potatoes with less fluff.

  • 2 stars - 1 for it being the book I needed. 1 for it not coming apart or having other complications. Minus 3 stars for it not standing out from other textbooks.

  • The book came with an unopened CD for the libraries used in R. This book is useful in learning key concepts in Statistics.

This was used for a college level course at a California University. Luckily it was an older edition, to save us some green.

  • it's pretty bad at explaining things. there are plenty of practice problems, but very little actual explanations of how things work. Basically, if you miss class, you're not going to be able to figure out what you missed by reading the book.

  • Book as described.
