Ber van Perlo has been traveling and living in Africa, mainly in Kenya, since his retirement from the Dutch National Forest Service in 1981. He has illustrated three bird guides: Megapodes, by René Dekker; Rails: A Guide to the Rails, Crakes, Gallinules and Coots of the World, by Barry Taylor; and A Field Guide to the Birds of the Indian Subcontinent, by Krys Kazmierczak.

Birds of Eastern Africa (Collins Field Guide). I bought this book in early 2015 for a Kenya birding trip in July of that year. During my usual process of annotating the field guide before the trip, I became so frustrated that I purchased another field guide. Birds of Southern Africa (Princeton Illustrated Checklists). I completed my annotation of this book, but never really looked at it again, and left it home on the trip. I took the Zimmerman field guide instead. Author van Perlo can certainly be commended for tackling such a huge task singlehandedly.

Ber van Perlo has written and illustrated numerous books, including the highly successful Birds of Southern Africa. He studied garden and landscape architecture at the Agricultural University of Wageningen in the Netherlands before working as a geographer and physical planner with the National Forestry Service of the Netherlands.

Van Perlo's book can be considered the best bird field guide produced so far for Brazil due to a combination of its light .

This latest publication of a field guide to Brazilian birds moves the bar a couple of notches above the several existing recent attempts, all of which have been published in Brazil. Ber van Perlo is the author and illustrator of numerous popular field guides including Birds of Eastern Africa, Birds of Southern Africa, Birds of Western and Central Africa, and Birds of Mexico and Central America.

This huge region's rich birdlife includes some of the most colorful species anywhere on earth-including ostriches, albatrosses, boobies, lovebirds, parrots, parakeets, kingfishers, and bee-eaters

This is the only pocket guide to all the known birds of eastern Africa, an area nearly half the size of the contiguous United States and including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, and Yemen's Socotra Island. Drawing on almost two decades of visits to the region, Ber van Perlo offers a concise reference whose 96 color plates and accompanying text describe all 1,487 species birders might see, including some of the most colorful anywhere on earth--from ostriches to albatrosses, boobies and cormorants to vultures, lovebirds, parrots, parakeets, cuckoos, kingfishers, bee-eaters, starlings, waxbills, weavers, and many more.

Each plate illustrates similar species and subspecies while the facing pages feature precise, pithy entries summing up physical traits, behavior, habitat, and voice. Distribution maps show the range and frequency of each species. This is an indispensable guide for all birders, amateur and professional alike, who have given thought to exploring the ornithological wealth of this part of Africa.
