In the United States, a placer claim grants to the discoverer of valuable minerals contained in loose material such as sand or gravel the right to mine on public land. Other countries such as Canada, Mexico, and Australia grant similar rights. In the United States, the valuable mineral in a placer claim is almost always gold, although other nations mine placer deposits of platinum, tin, and diamonds. Another type of mining claim is a lode claim.

  • I was looking for a book that I could use to research ghost/old towns, camps, trails, known mines and placer deposits. I live in Southern Nevada I came across "Gold Placer Deposits of Arizona", one of the areas interest to me. There are two versions, the original by Maureen Johnson in paperback and an updated version by Richard L. Lampright in digital format for a Kindle device.

I don't have a Kindle, but found out that you can get free Kindle Software to read the e-book on PC or MAC computers. After purchasing the e-book an email was immediately sent to me with the instructions on how to download the e-book. It was a speedy download taking no more than one minute. In less than 5 minutes I was ready to start my research.

The book identifies many locations of town, mines, and placer mining areas. The information is presented in a logical way. The most valuable upgrade from the original book is the addition of GPS coordinates. The book also gives "Township, Range, and Section" coordinates for towns.

I looked up the author's website and it is loaded with information on how he does his research and exploration. He uses Google Earth in conjunction with the GPS coordinates. Google earth displays images which pin-point the exact location of your target. You can see what the terrain is, whether it is forested or desert-like, road conditions, all based on the most current Google Earth images. This allows you to observe the location before you step out your door.

The only drawback in using the e-book and Google Earth is the inability to easily copy and paste the coordinates into Google Earth. I understand that MAC version of the Kindle reader does not have a problem with copy and paste as the PC version does.

  • Saves a lot of time researching where the gold is and where it once was found. I recommend this to any one who is interested in finding some gold as a hobby or!
