Discourses on Violence" is presents a wholly different and compelling theory to explain and understand the institution of war as a social phenomenon. Drawing heavily from emerging sociological and post-structuralist schools, Jabri offers what is destined to become a foundational text explaining the the recurrence of war and violence in society today. Jabri departs significantly from structuralist thought, developing what is called structuration theory, which postulates that while actors are constrained by the structure(political, social, economic, military) in which they operate, they also are a constitutive part of it, so that actor and structure are mutually constitutive. The basis of the argument is that the recurrence of war over time is the result of certain discursive and institutional continuities that serve to legitimate it's use by political elites as an instrument of policy.

This text re-examines the understanding of war and violent conflict through a critical, post-positivist lens. It offers a radical, interpretive approach to conflict studies, and finds new applications for some of the latest ideas in critical social theory. Jabri argues that to understand conflict we must see it as a social phenomenon - the product of societies and the politics which establish their identities. She advances the idea that discursive and institutional practices interact to generate ways in which international actors legitimate themselves. These practices are central to the perpetuation of war, and their transformation is a prerequisite for establishing the conditions for peace.
