Forgiving someone who has wronged you holds power far beyond the act itself. On The Beginner's Guide to Forgiveness, Jack Kornfield explores why forgiveness is essential to our health and happiness and how anyone can begin its practice. By embracing our own suffering, compassion arises naturally, so we can extend it to others as well as ourselves.

How to Free Your Heart and Awaken Compassion

How to Free Your Heart and Awaken Compassion. Narrated by: Jack Kornfield. Length: 1 hr and 11 mins.

Jack Kornfield harvests a lifetime of experiences to create a masterful, clear, and moving picture of the human mind and heart . But how to find it? Like my teacher Ajahn Chah, I’ve tried to convey the essence of these texts as a living, immediate, and practical psychology.

Jack Kornfield harvests a lifetime of experiences to create a masterful, clear, and moving picture of the human mind and heart, a picture whose hopeful healing power I find astounding. Forgiving someone who has wronged you holds power far beyond the act itself. On The Beginner's Guide to Forgiveness, Jack Kornfield explores why forgiveness is essential to our health and happiness and how anyone can begin its practice. Drawing from his background in meditation and psychology, Kornfield reveals the roots of the forgiveness process within our own internalized pain. By embracing our own suffering, compassion arises naturally, so we can extend it to others as well as ourselves. With guided meditations and insights from the world's wisdom teachings, Kornfield teaches that when forgiveness is practiced, it is a gift we give not only to others - but ultimately to ourselves.
  • This is a superb audio CD on forgiveness. I listen to it whenever I need an extra boost, because Jack Kornfield's voice has a very loving, peaceful resonance. It talks all about what forgiveness is, and what it isn't, and how to forgive while still protecting yourself and your boundaries, from negative people. Mostly it is very validating, understanding, and supportive. Anyone who has suffered from the words and deeds of someone in their past, can receive nourishment and guidance from listening to this CD.

  • I listen to CDs while commuting. It is really neat to be stuck in a traffic jam while listening to Jack Kornfield. It still does not make being stuck in traffic fun, but it makes anxiety feel silly.

Forgiveness is a tough subject, especially true forgiveness of one's own deeds is difficult. And true forgiveness (in contrast to fabricating excuses) lies at the core of this teaching. One sentence I have really enjoyed said (approximately): "To practice forgiveness means giving up all hope for a better past."

Jack Kornfield is easy to listen to, he tells us stories that point clearly to the heart. To your heart and the heart of the matter. I highly recommend this audio CD. Other Jack Kornfield favorites of mine are "The Roots of Buddhist Psychology" and "Buddhism for Beginners."

  • A very good talk and meditation practice. I listened to this over and over again, and it helps me to release my judgement to those who harmed me and bring more peace to life.

  • Up front, I admit I love almost everything Jack Kornfield recorded. But this CD is very important for our modern world. "Forgiveness" is not going to be a hot topic or best seller, I suppose. Most people are more focused on punishing the people they're angry at. Yet Kornfield tells stories on the CD that touch my heart in powerful ways. I repeated a few for my friend, who's not into Buddhism or meditation, and he was so moved that he had to stop for a few minutes to think about how different the world would be if we had "temples of forgiveness" as Kornfield says. Kornfield includes a meditation on forgiveness and a meditation on lovingkindness (metta). I practice both daily, and my heart has opened more as a result.

  • This audiobook is wonderfully titled THE beginner's GUIDE TO FORGIVENESS, since we are, after all, all beginners in the realm of forgiveness.

Etymologically, forgiveness means "to give first" and Kornfield's forgiveness training is all about giving, whether to our enemies, our friends and relatives, or ourselves.

Some of Kornfield's forgiveness stories are so poignant that they caused me to weep. Some are unbelievable, or would be, but for the fact that, after having lived long enough, nothing is unbelievable.

    And nothing is unforgivable.

This is an important life's lesson, and, as the spoken word, THE BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO FORGIVENESS has a far more powerful sense of immediacy than would it as the printed word.

  • I put this on in the car and listen to it during my lunch hour....It is so relaxing and calming. I don't think I could get tired of listening to this!!

  • I was having a lot of trouble forgiving people responsible for my son's death. This CD has helped me more than years of therapy.

  • I practice both daily, and my heart has opened more as a result.
