HUMBUGGERY AND MANIPULATION The Art of Leadership. Cornell University Press. After calling all leaders villains and liars, F. Bailey, a professor of anthropology at the University of California, San Diego, seems to expect the public to fight back. But why? Isn't this the season to attack politicians? Aren't we the people busy enough sniping at this officeholder for having an inflated image and that candidate for making hollow promises?

The Art of Manipulation. But what of the people who make these manipulative experiences? The corporations who unleash these addictive technologies are, after all, made up of human beings with a moral sense of right and wrong. We too have families and kids who are susceptible to addiction and manipulation.

VERY-GOOD-PLUS TRADE-PAPERBACK
  • Bailey has provided a much-needed corrective to the proliferation of trendy screeds on leadership that paint the subject in simplistic terms with the heroic male as subject by default. His approach provides something of a toolkit for unpacking the complexity of leadership in cross-cultural perspective that turns on the intersection of leadership styles with forms of authority. Nothing in his approach is over-determined or perspective because all leaders find themselves in a fluid social and cultural environment to which they must adapt (the opposite is often a recipe for disaster). Bailey has, thus, provided a truly useful work on leadership that is anchored to the real politik of this complicated challenge. There's no sugar coating to be found as Bailey takes his readers through not just the normative dimensions of leadership, but also its transgressive side. This is hardly a dry, academic work, but rather is highly readable with some biting humor mixed in.

  • If you want a counter-intuitive (at least I think it's counter-intuitive) take on leadership, this is your book. All that stuff about leaders being authentic? Genuine? Bailey says that's all hogwash. Leaders lie. They manipulate. And those are the good ones. They do it to get things done, but it is hard-wired into Bailey's version of leadership. It's an argument to listen to, if only for the sobering effect.

  • During my years of administrating my own business, I had read many books relating to this common topic. And this book, is not just one of hundreds. It gives you real methods on modifying situation, to enhance our success. I believe its worth the time to read it, to improve leadership skill which are vital in this modern "millennium" time.
