Marked up by Einde O’Callaghan for the Marxists’ Internet Archive (November 2009). 2. Understanding history. 5. The labour theory of value.

Chris Harman in this book states that "you can only understand how the world works is by understanding Marxism". He is absolutely right and this book demonstrates why. I own a lot of books, DVDs and articles on Political Science from the far left to the far right. My preferred contributors are Dave Emory, Peter Dale Scott, Richard Wollf, Micheal Parenti and past issues of Covert Action Information Quarterly.

  • This is a really fine brief introduction; cogent and compelling. I look forward to reading other works by Harman as a result. Very accessible and impressive.

  • Chris Harman in this book states that "you can only understand how the world works is by understanding Marxism". He is absolutely right and this book demonstrates why. I own a lot of books, DVDs and articles on Political Science from the far left to the far right. My preferred contributors are Dave Emory, Peter Dale Scott, Richard Wollf, Micheal Parenti and past issues of Covert Action Information Quarterly.Yet this book is the most important resource material I own.
Furthermore the Marxist explanation of how capitalism works is by far the most valid economic model ever produced. The far right apologists for Trickle Down Theory, Chicago Circle and Freidmanite models are nothing more than manufactured propaganda for wage under paying capitalists/fascists efforts to take control of peoples lives by creating the incredible lie that the markets left to themselves and unimpeded by the dead hand of government interference will create fair and optimum distribution of the economies goods and services. This is a totally unproven hypothesis.
Capitalism is great if you are a on the parasite the high end of the Surplus Value food chain-the top two percent of Americas wealth owners. For the rest of us on the lower end of the chain, you life is many periods of unemployment, downsizing, unions busted up, hours reduced, work hours changed, benefits reduced or ended, fire at will, removal of the social safety net and a whole host of other tactics used by managers to maximize profit/Surplus Value. If you do not understand what is taking place within American Society then read Harman's book along with Mobbing, The Bully at Work and Disgruntled; I wish Mr. Harmon would write a sequel to this book entitled "How Fascism Works" subtitled "Removing the Dead Hand Of Government Interference in the Marketplace".

  • This is a truly astounding introductory work on Marx's contribution. It explains so much about what Marx was writing about in so few words and yet so clearly and simply.I couldn't recommend a better introduction to Marx's ideas than this short book in which Harman covers everything from Marx's take on the social and historical basis of humanity to Marx's critique of political economy and his classic breakthrough in describing concrete and abstract labour, use value, exchange value, surplus value, the ralationship between constant and variable capital and the historical tendency of the rate of profit to fall resulting in economic crisis etc-this book is truly a modern classic of Marxism.

  • Harman's book is a little gem which is interesting, informative and easy to read. He demystifies Marxism and lays to rest the idea that you need a college degree to understand it. 'How Marxism Works' is a fantastic introduction to Marxism that gives an overview of all the main theories in an easily understandable manner. For all those people who want to change the world but think that Marxism is a discredited pipe dream, this book will open your eyes and light the fire in your belly.

  • I was given this book years ago. It's amazing how Chris Harman has figured out all these things from Marx, which Marx never wrote.

This would be better called "How Harmanism Work."

    That is my complaint.

My opinion of Harmanism, is that it's based on old ideas, without any thought of updating for the 21st century. It's conformist nonsense that gives Marx a bad name.

But even is I liked Harmanism, Harmanism still is not Marxism. Marx wrote volumes about capitalism, not post-capitalistic society.
