But Maniaty's real purpose is to visit Balibo for the first time since 1975

But Maniaty's real purpose is to visit Balibo for the first time since 1975. When he steps into the burned-out house where his colleagues were slaughtered thirty-three years ago, past and present collide before his eyes. Tony Maniaty has produced a wonderful book, combining the tale of his experiences as a foreign correspondent for the ABC during the terrible events of the Indonesian invasion of East Timor in 1975, with the events around his return to the 'half-island' nation in 2008 to assist the makers of the movie, Balibo.

In 1975, journalist Tony Maniaty flew to the Portuguese colony of East Timor looking for a war to film. He found it at a dusty outpost called Balibo. Maniaty and his ABC News crew were shelled and five other television newsmen who followed were murdered by Indonesian troops. Maniaty reported the Balibo Five story, faced death threats and fled before the Indonesian forces invaded. In Shooting Balibo, he teams up with the cast and crew of the feature film Balibo, retraces his days of danger, and dines with Jose Ramos-Horta as the independence dent recovers from.

Shooting Balibo book. Thirty years after he was there with the Balibo Five, Tony Maniaty returns to East Timor to lay his ghosts to rest, in a beautifully written memoir.

A brave and complex achievement. Racy and wryly reflective, one man's very moving version of history  . In 1975, journalist Tony Maniaty flew to the Portuguese colony of East Timor looking for a war to film.

The novel and the memoir, Shooting Balibo: Blood and Memory in East Timor, process Maniaty's experiences in widely divergent fashion, each implicitly asking questions of the other's hermeneutic manoeuvres in ways.

The novel and the memoir, Shooting Balibo: Blood and Memory in East Timor, process Maniaty's experiences in widely divergent fashion, each implicitly asking questions of the other's hermeneutic manoeuvres in ways that illuminate the nature of the implied contract between the observer of traumatic events and their representation in forms of narrative. This paper studies 45 fiction films whose shootings, carried out between 1922 and 2016, have taken place totally or partially in the Plaza Mayor of Madrid. It is a space that, due to its centrality, functionality, situation and architectural qualities represents one of the most iconic public spaces in the city, acting as a large stage.

  • Tony Maniaty has produced a wonderful book, combining the tale of his experiences as a foreign correspondent for the ABC during the terrible events of the Indonesian invasion of East Timor in 1975, with the events around his return to the 'half-island' nation in 2008 to assist the makers of the movie, Balibo. His chilling recall of the Indonesian military's brutal murder of the last six foreign journalists who remained in East Timor to witness the invasion comes back to haunt him as the events are recreated for the movie - and he realises how fortunate he was to have made his last-minute escape in 1975. Tony shows a true affinity for the country and the local people as he recounts their terrible fate at the hands of the Indonesians, while not glossing over the confusion, ineptitude and blood-letting of East Timor's fledgling government and new leaders at the time. The Australian and US Governments and their foreign affairs officials in 1975 have much to be ashamed of as well. A lot of mistakes have been made along the way, but the book does finish with an element of hope - "this brave, miniscule nation almost died by strangulation, came close to annihilation, but it did not." Well-written and the interplay of the events of 1975 and 2008 provides an interesting framework for the story - the contrast of the mounting tension and horror of the past with a hopefully more positive future.

This book is an excellent companion piece to that of another foreign correspondent, Richard Lloyd Parry's "In the Time of Madness: Indonesia on the Edge of Chaos."
