The founding fathers of the European Union are 11 men officially recognised as major contributors to European unity and the development of what is now the European Union

The founding fathers of the European Union are 11 men officially recognised as major contributors to European unity and the development of what is now the European Union. Of these, all but one (Winston Churchill from the United Kingdom) were from the Inner Six of the European Union. Sometimes emphasised are three pioneers of unification: Robert Schuman of France, Alcide De Gasperi of Italy and Konrad Adenauer of Germany. Dull, complex, unique and apparently remote. Little wonder people don't understand, let alone appreciate, the European Union

Dull, complex, unique and apparently remote. Little wonder people don't understand, let alone appreciate, the European Union. Europe: The State of the Union cuts through the jargon to offer a clear and concise assessment of this unique political institution.

Anand Menon avoids the excesses of both ardent Europhiles and sworn enemies of European integration, whose respective dreams of a federalist future and nightmares of a European superstate have so subverted public discussion

Anand Menon avoids the excesses of both ardent Europhiles and sworn enemies of European integration, whose respective dreams of a federalist future and nightmares of a European superstate have so subverted public discussion. While pointing out the Union's shortcomings, he argues that the EU is an ingenious and necessary tool of its member states, helping them address myriad complex policy problems they would not be able to handle alone. Europe: The State of the Union is an urgent and rigorous evaluation of the great strengths - and profound weaknesses - of European integration.

Menon's mission is to persuade us to move beyond the simplistic and trite pro- and anti-EU . By Anand Menon Atlantic Books 304pp £1. 9.

Menon's mission is to persuade us to move beyond the simplistic and trite pro- and anti-EU arguments that pervade the media and popular discourse to allow for a more reasoned discussion of what the EU is and how it ought to develop. Menon's argument is that the EU is not becoming a state in its own right but that it continues to remain dependent on its constituent member states. The fears and ambitions of both Eurosceptics and Euro-enthusiasts are misplaced, and excessive devotion and "hyper-criticism" are equally pernicious as they distract from the business of governing. The 2003 State of the Union Address was a speech delivered by . President George W. Bush, the 43rd United States President, on Tuesday, January 28, 2003. It outlined justifications for the 2003 invasion of Iraq. It began his discussion of the "war on terror" by asserting, as he had before September 11, 2001, that "the gravest danger facing America and the world, is outlaw regimes that seek and possess nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.
