This study considers how some people with non-heteronormative genders and sexualities experience their bodies and their gender . Engaging with feminist, poststructuralist and queer theories, it offers a critique of ‘gay sport’, with a particular emphasis on ‘inclusion’.

This study considers how some people with non-heteronormative genders and sexualities experience their bodies and their gender(s) in wilderness and what these stories might reveal about the broader implications of gender difference in . society as well as the distinctiveness of wilderness settings. We use a post-structural feminist framework to understand the subjective experiences of gender; by deconstructing the category of 'woman', for example, we open a space for the telling of alternative wilderness narratives.

Jayne Caudwell teaches socio-cultural approaches to sport and leisure at the University of Brighton. Kath Browne teaches social and cultural geographies at the University of Brighton.

The first book focusing exclusively on this subject, Sport, Sexualities and Queer/Theory captures the newest and best writing on an emerging focus of study that brings in perspectives from a number of disciplines including sports studies, gender studies, sociology, cultural studies, lesbian and gay studies, and queer studies. An accessible introduction to this dynamic field, this is an explorative analysis of lesbian, gay, transgender, transsexual and intersex people’s experiences of sport as well as a rigorous theoretical consideration of sociological and political issues.

Bringing together in a single source an exciting array of contributions, this is an ideal source of inspiration for anyone involved in this rapidly growing field, and fills a need for an excellent introduction to the main themes and issues.
