Janet Squires and Holly Berry put a bit of southwest spice into the traditional story of the gingerbread man. Their southwestern take will spice up preschool and story time reading. The gingerbread cowboy gallops along at a frantic pace as he runs from familiar characters from the desert southwest, including a hungry roadrunner, prickly-pear-eating javelinas (pronounce hav-uh-leen-uhs), long-horned cattle, hungry wranglers who chase the gingerbread cowboy, and his final nemesis, a clever coyote. Squire's characters are entertaining and reflect the can-do attitude associated with southwest living.

  • A Big Hit with my 5-year old granddaughter. It's basically just the Gingerbread Man told with cowboys. The kids love reciting the repetitive "Run..." lines. Spoiler: he gets eaten at the end and they commence creating more of his kind to murder at the end. Kids are weird...they don't seem to think that's creepy. ;-)

  • Cute retelling of the classic gingerbread boy story with a Southwestern flair, ending with his being eaten by a coyote instead of a wolf. I teach a course in children's literature at UTEP in El Paso, so we're always looking for books and retellings of the classics that kids here can relate to. A student in my class introduced me to this one. I checked a copy out of the library and my 4-year-old grandson loved it too, so I bought a copy to add to my own collection.

  • This is always the culminating book in my Pre-K gingerbread man unit. After reading the book, we sit around the "campfire" (a pot on a hotplate, surrounded by logs) and cook beanie weanies, re-read the story, and talk about being a cowboy. It's a rollicking good tale.

  • This book is SO much fun! An excellent twist on the tradition gingerbread man story and SO fun to read aloud to the kids with the country accent. Great for boys or girls!

  • Book arrived in great condition. Story and illustrations are delightful.

  • Grandson loves!

  • I bought this for my daughters preK class. She loves it.

  • Funny book.
