Public Sex: The Culture of Radical Sex. Pat Califia. Read this via Audible and was so inspired by it. Had been reading another Califia book on Scribd a few years back, but it had been pulled (assuming by the author/publisher) and sadly, could not finish.

Public Sex: The Culture of Radical Sex. Black Queer Studies: A Critical Anthology. But got to listen to this book in it's entirety and the variety of topics made it more enjoyable. You also get a sense of the author's development as a person, as the essays seem to be from different time periods over the years. What always seemed apparent during the reading, is the strength of character resting inside Patrick.

This quote from Patrick Califia's book Speaking Sex to Power reminds all of who have become invested in the power of identity politics to be wary of its essentialist and fracturing nature.

Speaking Sex to Power charts Patrick Califia-Rice's provocative views, which often conflict with not only mainstream society but also much of the lesbian, gay, and feminist movements. Along with essays on antiporn feminism, the Bush cabinet, and repression of S/M, Califia-Rice writes of his decision to undergo a sex change. Speaking Sex to Power charts Patrick Califia-Rices provocative views, which often conflict with not only mainstream society but also much of the lesbian, gay, and feminist movements.

Hailed "a revolutionary antidote to America's growing sexual conservatism," Patrick Califia is the most outspoken and intelligent commentator on sexual politics writing today. Following the acclaimed publication of Public Sex and Sex Changes, Califia once again exposes American mainstream culture with unrivaled brillance and integrity. As controversial in writing about the private sphere as the public, Califia speaks intimately of changing his gender identy from female to male and becoming a parent in a two-fathered household. Speaking Sex to Power takes the reader on a remarkable intellectual journey with one of America's most audacious thinkers.
  • This is a review for the AUDIBLE version. While I was very interested in the subject matter, the narrator was robotic and awkward, droning on in a monotone and then randomly over-emphasizing words as if that made up for his previous lack of interest.

I would have posted this on audible, but their silly system apparently doesn't allow one to write a review after returning a book. Next time I will review first and then return.

Topics or situations I had not previously considered.

Then when I was at my studio, a peek into my BSDM book collection revealed that I've been reading Califia books for over a decade, and did not even realize it was the same person! Now I know how to find this valuable resource for great reads, I'm going to stick around to explore further. 5 stars for the author, and I also give 5 stars for the narrator. He did not bother me the way he irritated the other review writer on here.
