In 1849 the Separate, or Model Prison was built in Port Arthur, Tasmania. Quoted in Penal Peninsula, I Brand, date unknown. Here, the punishment was isolation and lack of human contact. Taking on board some of Jeremy Bentham's ideas about the Panopticon, the separate prison was based on that in Pentonville in London. The extreme isolation of the separate prison did tame even the hardest convicts, but it also reportedly turned men mad. In 1853, Frederick Mackie inspected the separate prison. The following is an extract of his report; "The strictest silence is maintained, both prisoners and officers walk in slippers, and the officers.

It is joined to the rest of Tasmania by a small narrow piece of land about 30 metres wide. Port Arthur was seen as a much better prison, and would make the convicts better people. But life at Port Arthur was just as hard and brutal as other penal colonies. Some critics might even say that its use of psychological punishment, together with no hope of escape, made it one of the worst.
